Gobbolino by Ursula Moray Williams is the charming tale of a witch's cat who would rather be a kitchen cat. Perhaps the one flaw of the book is that it is difficult to see how anyone could fail to love this little fellow. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Whether this is because the author's skill improved in the four years between the two books or because cats are easier to anthropomorphize than wooden toys, is a matter for debate. She wrote and illustrated over sixty books for children with the most notable being Gobbolino the Witch's Cat and The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse.

I love this story of a little cat who, though born to a witch's cat, just isn't cut out to be a witch's cat like his mother and sister. Rediscover the magical adventure of Gobbolino the kitten and his friend the Little Wooden Horse, brought to life with gorgeous inside and cover illustrations from Catherine Rayner. I love cats, I adore cats and no matter how simple this book is, I just couldn't help falling in love with Gobbolino.

Born to a witch's cat, Gobbolino wants nothing more than to find a home amongst the warmth and bustle of a kitchen. It’s a good read-aloud book and my kids couldn’t wait to find out where Gobbolino might end up next. Although it is quite a long book for a younger audience, each chapter is a like a mini story so children could dip in and out of it because they would not have to remember what happened before to understand the entire story. He is adopted by a sick princess, but when she is well again she leaves for boarding school without him, so he joins a Punch and Judy show as 'Toby the Dog', but a witch in the audience reveals him as a witch's cat. I've owned kittens, they grow very fast, and his sister certainly becomes an adult cat in the same time, but Gobbolino remains stunted, kittenish-- immature. My daughter (aged 6) got a little upset with the book a few times, as life is repeatedly harsh on Gobbolino, and though the ending was happy, it made her quite angry!

Sweet story about a witch’s cat who wants to be an ordinary kitchen cat, and all of his adventures on the journey to find a forever home. Romanul acesta nu e doar despre un pisoi amărât, ci e și un pretext de a vorbi despre fiecare copil sau chiar adult care încearcă să se integreze undeva și să se facă plăcut. My feeling of dissatisfaction is probably more with the similarity between Gobbolino's world and the actual world we all live in, rather than the story that pointed to the similarity.
