I managed to get some photos of them with both my phone and a DSLR camera by carefully pointing them up through the bottom opening of the bat house. We had at least three and possibly four in there! But I had little confidence in my bat identification skills so I had no idea who our new friends were. That’s when we started searching for a bat detector. A first look at the bats in our bat house. But who are they? The interesting thing, about the issues in the above list of Cons, is that at least two of them can (and may) be reconciled via firmware updates. Specifically, the Microphone sensitivity adjustment and Trigger threshold setting. Once again, it's hard to ignore the flexibility (and possibilities) of The Echo Meter Touch. A set of two replacement windscreens and clips for use with the SMX-U1, SMX-UT, SMX-II, SM3 & SMM microphones.

After many days of research and wondering what would be the best bat detector for me, I came across a really cool bat detector kit that includes both an ultrasonic microphone and a bat detector app for my phone. So I got one for myself and tested it for a couple months. Now I’m convinced that the Wildlife Acoustics Echo Meter Touch 2 is the best bat detector on the market for both wildlife enthusiasts and for hand-held scientific field research. In a nutshell, it’s the most compact, powerful, easy-to-use,and affordable option out there. The Echo Meter Touch 2 bat detector by Wildlife Acoustics is compact, powerful, and affordable. Fortunately, there are many places, where one may do some bat detecting, without the risk of being mugged. This, I can practically guarantee - It simply requires a bit of forethought on your part. Be safe. With the SM2 Power Adaptor, you can hook up an external battery or a complete solar panel charging system. The unit attaches directly to a 6v or 12v battery source and provides a 5v output to the SM2. The Power Adapter includes a voltage regulator to provide over- or reverse-voltage protection, and is completely weatherproof. With the SM3 Power Cable, you can hook up an external battery or a complete solar panel charging system to the SM3 or SM4. The unit attaches directly to a 6v or 12v battery source.

If you set it to “Sensitive” then you’ll get more identifications but they’ll be less likely to be accurate. Conversely, if you use the “Accurate” setting you’ll get fewer ID’s but you’ll have a much higher accuracy rate. If you want something in between you can choose “Balanced”. You can change the auto ID sensitivity in the advanced settings. I will confess, right at the start - Even I made a few (minor) assumptions, prior to having access to the User Manual and receiving the equipment for test. Read on...and all will be made clear.

Reviews Of Detectors Which Are No Longer Produced

The distance at which a bat detector can detect and/or record bats, has always been one of the most important factors (for me). This is the case whenever I evaluate any bat detector. In layman's terms - I now wonder how I ever got along without one! An Apple iPad, that is. In short, I've found The iPad mini Retina to easily outperform my (usual) Asus mini-notebook; in just about every aspect. The intuitive EMT2 lets you listen to, record and identify bats by their ultrasonic echolocation calls, using your Android device via the Echo Meter Touch App. This hand-held detector provides outdoor enthusiasts, citizen scientists, and researchers an affordable and informative way to reveal the somewhat invisible world of bats.

During August 2020 we took several EMT2 units to a nearby woodland to survey for the presence of bats. The Android units were used in conjunction with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 (requiring the micro USB to USB-C adapter) and the iOS units used with an iPhone SE 2020. The Explorer Premium Digital Endoscope is lightweight and easy to operate. It can record still images or video on to a microSD / microSDHC card (not included). The screen can be detached whilst the camera is in operation and viewed up to 10m away. The camera head has a diameter of 9mm and the cable is 91cm long, giving easy access to nest boxes, burrows, nests, crevices etc. Lighting levels can be adjusted to minimise disturbance to animals. Accessories Thanks again to Internet access, the live (and recorded) GPS' accuracy seems to be just a hair more precise than even The Batlogger's. For example - When doing some simple bat detecting from within a home: The Batlogger M almost "knew" which room of the house you were in. With The EM Touch, it actually does "know" exactly which room the unit is in.

Books I highly recommend!

A series of sharp, descending chirps, repeated in clusters. Someone was preparing to exit the box! I hit the manual recording button (which starts recording 5 seconds in the past so you don’t miss anything) and looked up. The chirps became louder and faster and then, right before my eyes, a bat descended from the box and swooped up over my head into the gloomy dusk. Woo hoo! Bats use ultrasonic calls both to detect their surroundings and to communicate with eachother. These sounds are too high to be heard by the unaided human ear. The EM Touch uses a special microphone combined with software to transform this sound into a frequency that is audible. You can listen either through the speaker of your phone/tablet or using earphones. You can also view the bat call as a sonogram whichis a visual representation of the sound. With some experience, you will learn how to recognise the different species based on the shapeof their sonograms. A comprehensive guide to the calls of the 44 species of bat currently known to occur in Europe. Following on from the popular British Bat Calls by Jon Russ, this new book draws on the expertise of more than forty specialist authors to substantially update all sections, further expanding the volume to include sound analysis and species identification of all European bats. If you have a device that is GPS enabled, Echo Meter Touch will tag your recordings with useful location data. The free Echo Meter Touch app is available on the Google Play Store. It includes two bat recordings that let you start practicing with your Android device right away. We found that, for the species common in our area, such as Common Pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus pipistrellus), Soprano Pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus pygmaeus) and the Noctule ( Nyctalus noctule), the auto-ID feature appeared mostly accurate. Although, on one occasion before dusk we found that a bird call triggered a Common Pipistrelle identification. It is important to note that no Auto-ID feature can be 100% accurate, and Wildlife Acoustics make it clear that users should always manually verify the identification.
