Royal British Legion’s Teaching Remembrance Hub - Remembrance resources suitable for school and home Randolph Schwabe was a well-known British artist and professor at the Slade School of Art, but during the war he worried that his German heritage might cause him problems. Nevertheless, he was approached to create a Hall of Remembrance painting for the British government. Schwabe suggested that he cover land subjects, and created Voluntary Land Workers in a Flax-field, Podington, Northamptonshire. The Hall of Remembrance paintings were supposed to cover a broad cross-section of war experience. However, Schwabe was the only artist to make a painting for the commission that focused on women and women’s work. As I worked I became aware of how the pieces acted like ‘stops in a journey’ or ‘snapshots’ of a given time, connecting time away travelling and working, to the more intimate and familiar space of home. Finally Whitaker looks at the controversial French non-combatant Maurice Barres who wrote romantically of dead soldiers rising up in the trenches to help their besieged comrades, bringing a stinging rebuke from combat veteran and poet Marc de Larreguy de Civrieux for this rosy view of trench warfare. Custom Memorial Portrait, Memorial Watercolor Portrait For Loved One Remembrance Day, Watercolor Portrait, Grieving Sentimental For Him/HerAs I worked, botanical forms, birds and small details crept in as a focus of calm amidst the disruption of time and personal space. I am mindful of how historically the similar references to botanical and landscape watercolour studies and fine embroidery were perceived as an acceptable means of feminine craft or entertainment in the home. We have created Remembrance resources in partnership with Cadets, Girlguiding, Cadets, and Scouts for young people to connect and engage with Remembrance.

It’s also called Armistice Day or Poppy Day. The process can be incredibly lengthy and complex but always fall into three key areas and not usually worked on in any one sequence. I sometimes start with stitch for example as opposed to mark making. Fostering a culture of remembrance is crucial to the future of our democracies,’ write Schafhausen and Bischoff in the accompanying exhibition literature. ‘It creates awareness not only of the historical conditions that have led to exclusion, degradation and destruction, but also of our responsibility for ensuring that these processes – created and influenced by people – do not repeat themselves.’ Installing a contemporary art exhibition within a permanent museum display designed to foster an engagement with history engenders certain risks – for instance, that one or the other might appear damaged or exploited. In ‘Tell me about yesterday tomorrow’, however, both elements come together on equal terms, complementing each other in unexpected and productive ways.Jacqueline Hurley is widely regarded as the country’s foremost remembrance artist having had the honour of exhibiting her artwork at the National Memorial Arboretum, on three occasions at The Royal Albert Hall for the Festival of Remembrance, and at the St Clement Danes RAF Memorial Church, London.
