This edition includes a new Foreword and Epilogue to update Andrew’s story and underline its continuing relevance to a whole new generation of readers. A special updated edition of this bestselling book celebrating the 60th anniversary of Brother Andrew's first trip. com) coauthored numerous bestsellers such as The Hiding Place , The Cross and the Switchblade , and God's Smuggler .

This is the story of Brother Andrew, the famous Dutch missionary who smuggled Bibles to Christians behind the Iron Curtain during the 1950s and 60s. Elizabeth and John (1923-2017) Sherrill co-authored numerous bestsellers and co-founded Chosen Books. In his book Light Force, he tells of Arab and Lebanese churches in Lebanon, Israel and Israeli-occupied areas expressing great delight at the mere visit of a fellow Christian from abroad since they felt that the church in the Western world at large was mostly ignoring them.Elizabeth Sherrill is the author behind the classic best sellers The Hiding Place about Corrie ten Boom, The Cross and the Switchblade about David Wilkerson, and God's Smuggler about Brother Andrew. He's the son of the village blacksmith, living in poverty exacerbated by WWII, who joined the armed forces to find those adventures; although that didn't work out, God planted a seed within him, a seed which grew into the Open Doors ministry. I was a bit wary at first, because I knew nothing of Brother Andrew and religious/doctrinal books require discretion.

I will say that the events recounted here caused me to reevaluate my own life, my own Christianity, my own faith and my attitude toward faith. Under persecution a man looks to his faith to see if it's worth fighting for, and this is a scrutiny Christianity can always withstand. Open Doors-oprichter Anne van der Bijl overleden: hij gaf de vervolgde kerk een gezicht" [Open Doors founder Anne van der Bijl passed away: he gave the persecuted church a face]. I regret not having read this book sooner, but having read it now, I will not ignore its powerful message and example.

His childhood is so interesting and rather exciting (and I relate to having a half-deaf father who always needs you to yell things xD). He began to see just how limited religious freedom was in many of the Communist countries, and his burden grew to get as many Bibles to as many people as possible. He signed up on a government-controlled Communist tour to Czechoslovakia, the only legal way to be in the country, during which he left the tour to meet with local Christian groups. This is a book every Christian, especially young people, should read, whether you're interested in missions or not.
