Cost-Effective:Few roofing materials offer the same combination of performance and affordability, saving on materials and labour. Then fit your shingle underlay onto the exposed roof. Ensure that your underlay extends beyond the edges of the roof by around 50mm. The underlay will be applied in strips, with each strip overlapping the previous one by at least 75mm. Then turn down the edges and nail it at 500mm centres. Preparing The Roof For Felt Shingles

Often we even have free offers on across our Log Cabins and other garden buildings and structures, look out for them! To carry out the ridge detailing cut the individual tabs from a strip mitred by 40mm. On the roof again use a chalk line or straight edge to ensure correct positioning and alignment. Starting at one end locate the tap with the mitred edge, pointing along the ridge. Nail into position, ensuring that each ridge shingle overlaps the previous one, exposing about 145mm.At the corners of the roof, cut the roofing shingles to create an overlap when Folded around the corner, then nail this into position. Fixing The Felt Shingles in Place To set the first row of shingles you will need to trim some material from one edge of the shingle strip before fixing them at the eaves. With the square butt shingles, this should be 125mm. Or if using fishscale shingles, trim off 100mm. You’ll need to do this for all odd-numbered rows. Next, you need to make shingle strips for the roof edges. Cut off the tabs from a single shingle strip to create the detailing pieces. Felt is an incredibly popular roofing material amongst DIYers and roofing professionals due to its ease of installation and budget-friendly costs. Felt roofs are most commonly used on shed roofs, garage roofs and other outbuildings, but can also be used on flat roofs such as on small extensions and porches.

Whether you’re re-roofing a shed, or constructing a brand-new summer house, feltshingles are an affordable, practical, and stylish roofing solution. These shingles are expertly manufactured using high-tensile felt coated with tough bitumen fibres to ensure superb durability, a watertight seal, and a modern aesthetic at an affordable price. Continue this process until one side of the shed has been completed, and then repeat on the other side. 7. Add a capping sheet Once both sides of the roof have been felted, a capping sheet is required. This is a piece of felt that sits over the ridge of the roof. The capping sheet needs to be placed across the top of the roof, ensuring that there is a 7.5cm overlap over the felt on each side of the roof. Apply felt roof adhesive to the underside of the ridge sheet on both sides and press it into place, before nailing it down at 5cm intervals. Versatile: Suitable for roofs with pitches between 12° and 90°, roof shingles are compatible with an extensive range of properties and buildings. Now lay the roofing felt out across the roof, or dry ground, and leave it there for half an hour. Once it’s been rested it should be easier to manipulate and fix into place. 4. Lay the first piece of feltAlthough single layer felt roofs are available, felt roofing generally uses two or three sheets of modified bitumen felts. This is especially the case for roofs with a pitch below 10°. A three layer system is widely used as it increases the durability of the roof and its resistance to UV radiation. Be aware, when folding the edge pieces and in cold conditions, you may need to warm the material first to make it more supple and pliable. They are recommending IKO Glass Fibre Underlay 20m (Type 3B). This is similar to a standard roofing felt and if you are choosing to use a membrane we would recommend felt over the IKO membrane. Rolled roofing will not make your structure any more attractive. It is generally considered a less attractive roofing material than shingles or other types of roofing systems.Homeowner's associations in gated communities may not allow the installation of any structure with rolled roofing, even outbuildings.

Felt roof repair is relatively easy. The material can simply be patched up if there is a tear or hole in the roof, unlike other roof materials that can have a much more complex and time-consuming repair process. Budget-friendly If required, add another roll or two of felt to ensure the roof is completely covered. Always ensure there is at least 5cm of overlap between each sheet, and nail down the felt from the centre outwards as before. 6. Spread adhesive To seal joints and openings apply a bead of lap mastic around the perimeter edges of overlap sections. On the last cover strip, apply an extra bead to ensure a secure bond. Now take the second piece of shed felt and lay it across the roof, ensuring there is an overlap over the first roll of felt – try to ensure this is around 5-7.5cm. Again, nail the top of the roofing felt into place. 5. Add felt adhesive

Felt is an extremely lightweight material, which means it can be used on a number of weaker and less structurally sound buildings, such as garden sheds and outbuildings without any concerns that it will be too heavy. Easy to install Lay the first length of the shed roof felt across the bottom part of the shed roof, ensuring the overhang is there, before nailing the top edge of the felt with galvanised nails. Try to achieve an even gap of around 50cm between each nail. Then fold the edges of the felt around the edges of the roof and nail them into place. 4. Lay the second piece of felt Ashbrook Roofing is an experienced roofing company, not only sells a range of shed felt but we also have a team of roofers using it on buildings across the country. Try to find an even base to do this on. lay your feet out, around 30 minutes before you need it, so it has a chance to flatten out. A wooden board is best because it’s flat, and even, will prevent tears in your felt and protect your lawn from any chemicals that might leech out of the shed felt. Replacing The Old Damaged Felt
