Note that if you're a basshead this headphone is not for you. If you're used to the V-shaped sound signature with bass region elevated by as much as +10dB compared to the Harman curve, these will seem like they don't have bass.

EQ can make this headphone close to neutral sounding, apart from the sub-bass region. Elevate the sub-bass in EQ and distorsion will rise exponentially, allowing you to only listen at low to medium levels.Being made of velour, the pads are way more comfortable than leather and they will also last much longer. Another thing I immediately noticed was it sounded kind of muffled, like vocals were recessed from the rest of the spectrum. While there are various storage cases available separately, these headphones don’t fold flat. That can cause strain in some commuting environments. Single-entry cable. I've grown tired of the double entry. Ok, that wasn't a must, but it would be a bonus. Before I jump into my review, I feel it's important to give some context about myself that ultimately influenced my review.

The impedance seemed high at 50Ω, but I said to myself that I can use the power amplifier which I had connected to my computer as that has a 6.3mm headphone output. I personally don't like leather pads and headbands as they tend to be a magnet for the slightest trace of sebum on your skin or hair (requiring cleaning almost every time you use them) and leather also tends to make your ears get hot after longer periods of use. Of course not all leather pads are bad, but I clearly prefer velour. All of these criteria, through extensive searching on web, led me to the Sennheiser HD 559. There's not a lot out there, but I was able to find enough matches to my query that prompted me to pull the trigger on these. The 559 comes in a standard Sennheiser box. Inside, you’ll find the headphones, a detachable headphone cable, and a warranty booklet. While everything I said above about the HD 559 is true--the sound stage, the resolution, the scaling, the speed, punching way above their price point, etc., I need to make a correction. Well anyway, I recently decided I wanted to use closed headphones to watch movies at night as to not disturb my girlfriend or downstairs neighbor. No problem, I'll use my Shure 1540. But, despite being properly stored in their box for years, they still managed to fall apart within a few hours of use. The ear pads disintegrated and the headband pad fell apart. Geez. That was discouraging.

Clamping force is on the high side and combined with the fact that pads are rather thin and hard, it can be a bit uncomfortable to some. But compared to other systems, I would say this is one of the very good ones. The cups are very large and deep, so your ear will stay suspended inside the cups, not really touching anything. Not necessarily bright or relaxed, the 559 skimps on the highest high notes while retaining plenty of detail and contrast in the rest of the high end. The sound is sharp and articulate, but without being piercing or unpleasant.Overall the build quality is good and there are few reports of construction flaws or damage beyond normal wear and tear. Recently, seeing that it was collecting dust I decided to give it another try. The headband was partly detached (a typical issue on many Senheiser 5xx series), so I glued it with gel type super glue and let it cure overnight on the headphone stand. The low-end only starts to distort and breakup a small amount at higher volume levels. Overall, bass response is still up to entry-audiophile standards and you’ll have a lot of fun with it. As successor to our popular HD 500 series, the Sennheiser HD 5 model range offers high quality and value in any aspect. Powered by Sennheiser’s proprietary transducer technology including the “Ergonomic acoustic refinement” (E.A.R.) design, which channels the audio signal directly into your ears. Featuring a contemporary design that is both attractive and ergonomic. A real treat for all, who listen to their music with a sense of discovery.

A 9.8 feet (3 meters) straight detachable cable is the only thing included with the Sennheiser HD 559 headphones. There is a depth and space to the sound that the AKG's never had, whilst also having a remarkable amount of detail.I don’t claim to be a huge audiophile, but to my untrained ears these are the best headphones that have ever gone onto my head! Next day, after cleaning the headband and pads a bit, I decided to give it a listen on one of my cassette walkmans. I would not use it much with a DAC/amp or a DAP, as for serious listening I have much better pairs. The SR80e is more high-mid-centric. As a result, vocals are beautifully detailed and crisp in addition to sitting a bit higher in the mix than they would otherwise. This high-mid emphasis combined with the warm and colorful high frequencies — a Grado signature in my opinion — makes vocal breath and cymbal sustain sparkle in a unique and warm way across genres and vibes. As a result, the high-mids have a nice sense of depth and contribute to the detail of its expansive sense of width. This pair of headphones is a relatively new member of the HD 500-series. This series is well known for its reliability and quality performance. Holding the headphones up side-by-side, it is clear that they have vastly different designs. The Sennheiser HD 559’s headband is made mostly of plastic. It also has a super soft cushion on its underside that is coated with a light velvet material. Oh the other hand, the Grado SR80e’s headband is made of metal and is coated with leather. It doesn’t have any significant padding. However I found it to be more comfortable than the HD 559’s headband. Why, you ask? The HD 559 is heavier than the SR80e and hugs the head tighter. The SR80e is incredibly light and doesn’t squeeze my delicate head.
