The two M.2 slots on the underside of the housing show that the DiskStation DS723+ wants to meet high demands. NVMe SSDs in 2280 size can be inserted here, which can be used for fast caching as well as for additional storage capacity. However when it comes to transcoding a 4K video to 1080p the Synology DS723+ was struggling to keep up and as seen in the metrics below CPU and Memory utilization was reaching its peak. The video was buffering and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. 1080p to 720p conversion faired better and while the CPU utilization peaked again, it hovered around 45% mark after approximately 40 seconds. Wonder if synology will eventually released a NAS capable of 4K transcoding. I’m thinking about building my own NAS with unraid. I’m looking to update my DS1517+ within the next few month possibly.

I suspect they would be close, and I wonder what the price differential would be?

I am a home user trying to decide whether to move to a NAS and if so, whether to use a 5-bay or a 6-bay NAS. (I presently have a SANS Digital 5-bay USB RAID in a RAID5 and a Promise Pegasus R6 6-bay Thunderbolt RAID in a RAID6.) Based on internal processor benchmarks between DS923+ and the prior-gen DS920+. Actual performance may vary depending on hardware and software configuration, workload, and testing environment.

AMD has some good low powered CPU’s with GPU. This chip is a downgrade. QNAP and Terramaster is starting to look good.I’m a committed Synology user for the last 10 years and this coupled with the hard drive compatibility issues will finally see me cross over to QNAP. This needs to be said in every single video about any new Synology NAS as this is extremely anti consumer Amazing content, as always. As much as I love the possibility of free stuff, I’d prefer the video content.
