This is the challenge and opportunity we take up on Evangelii Gaudium Sunday. Formerly known as Home Mission Sunday, Evangelii Gaudium Sunday is celebrated each year on the Third Sunday in September. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”[90-94] Evangelii Gaudium Sunday calls us to be joyous in proclaiming our faith. “ Evangelii Gaudium” is Latin for “Joy of the Gospel ”. The day supports the work carried out by the Mission Directorate on behalf of the Bishops’ Conference. Słowo zawiera w sobie potencjał, którego nie możemy przewidzieć. Ewangelia mówi o nasieniu, które posiane, samo rośnie, nawet jeśli rolnik śpi (por. Mk 4, 26-29). Kościół musi przyjąć te nieuchwytną wolność Słowa skutecznego na swój sposób, w bardzo różnych formach wykraczających poza nasze przewidywania i łamiących nasze schematy. Just as you cannot understand Christ apart from the kingdom he came to bring, so too your personal mission is inseparable from the building of that kingdom: “Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness” ( Mt 6:33). Your identification with Christ and his will involves a commitment to build with him that kingdom of love, justice and universal peace. Christ himself wants to experience this with you, in all the efforts and sacrifices that it entails, but also in all the joy and enrichment it brings. You cannot grow in holiness without committing yourself, body and soul, to giving your best to this endeavour.

Then, “as they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them” (v. 15). As when he first called the disciples, so now, amid their bewilderment, the Lord takes the initiative; he approaches them and walks alongside them. So too, in his great mercy, he never tires of being with us, despite all our failings, doubts, weaknesses, and the dismay and pessimism that make us become “foolish and slow of heart” (v. 25), men and women of little faith.Sogno una scelta missionaria capace di trasformare ogni cosa, perché le consuetudini, gli stili, gli orari, il linguaggio e ogni struttura ecclesiale diventino un canale adeguato per l’evangelizzazione del mondo attuale, più che per l’autopreservazione. La riforma delle strutture, che esige la conversione pastorale, si può intendere solo in questo senso: fare in modo che esse diventino tutte più missionarie, che la pastorale ordinaria in tutte le sue istanze sia più espansiva e aperta, che ponga gli agenti pastorali in costante atteggiamento di “uscita” e favorisca così la risposta positiva di tutti coloro ai quali Gesù offre la sua amicizia. Come diceva Giovanni Paolo II ai Vescovi dell’Oceania, «ogni rinnovamento nella Chiesa deve avere la missione come suo scopo per non cadere preda di una specie d’introversione ecclesiale». [25]
