Description

Naturally, the story moved out of her perspective as it expanded, but how did it feel to branch out into writing Jay and Henry’s POVs? As well as being a wife and mother, Ellie is an avid tennis fan, a passionate reader of both fiction and nonfiction—especially memoirs (because nothing’s as juicy as the truth)—and a firm believer in the restorative value of a good craft cocktail.

This ambiguous status makes the neighbor particularly interesting as an entry point into issues of cultural complexity, self-definition and identity. Heaven and Calvin have been together for three years and are finally ready to move in together, but finding a place they can afford near Calvin’s gym is proving stressful and makes Heaven wonder if they should wait a little longer before moving in together. Then we get to 45%, and the story gets weird… I don’t always mind a strange plot change, but this one was bad. Land, which I have found to offer wonderfully affirming and accepting messages alongside real practical advice in a friendly community. We never learn the motives of the "bad guy" at the end of the book, nor the motives of the "bad guy's" spouse's reaction (which seemed over-the-top.

It brings me comfort to experience these heartbreaking moments with characters I love and watch them discover something about themselves in the process.

It’s a pretty generic story but it was fast paced and due to the mass amount of characters, I didn’t have any idea who could have been the mischievous note-leaver. I knew that this was two m/f couples that are neighbors and that the woman were also involved with each other with their partners full knowledge and consent. I feel the old therapy sessions should have had distinct chapters to themselves and Kat and her husband's inability to communicate with each other on seemingly any level did get frustrating at times, but still a very enjoyable read. The resolution was also very neat and tidy: it took a couple of pages to tie everything up in a nice neat package. He’s affectionate, he always wants to be around his people, he’s empathetic and pays attention to their moods, and he’s anxious when he’s left alone.

I loved the descriptions of all the characters and how they interacted and the undercurrent that was running through the book, what was the secret, well I never saw that coming, no spoilers from me, but I thought this was a cracking good read and I enjoyed reading it. Peña—examine conjunto music, the corrido, Gulf fishermen's stories, rodeo traditions, dog trading and dog-trading tales, Mexican bakers' lore, Austin's "cosmic cowboy" scene, and other fascinating aspects of folklore in Texas. Ok so I nearly bought this as my kindle first when it was available earlier this year, so was delighted it was available for a daily deal today. For Heaven, that means going to Calvin’s boxing matches though she hates the scrutiny and often feels others don’t think she’s worthy of him. Which is all a very, very long way of saying: Yes, I have absolutely, more than once, considered going back and writing those early days from another perspective.
