Meanwhile, as a long-hidden document threatens to resurface, the mistress of Puivert is obsessed with uncovering its secret and strengthening her power.

The pages that head each part are adorned with photos that compliment the setting of the next section, a nice touch that firmly gives the reader a sense of time and place. The book has instalove, a randy priest, a counterfeit shroud, secrets (of course), a stolen inheritance and one extremely melodramatic character (who devolves into totally batshit crazy by the end of the book). I should have read a nonfiction book about it instead, because it definitely takes a back seat in this book. In 1912 in a Sussex churchyard, villagers gather on the evening when the spirits of those who will die in the coming year will be seen. Not only is that a conflict but long time friends Piet, now a Huguenot, and Vilad, a Catholic priest, are fighting over the purported shroud of Christ. The country has been torn apart over matters of religion, citizenship and sovereignty, but a royal wedding may mean peace at last. harm can be done by those who proffer an opinion when they are only in partial possession of the facts.

Around the same time, Minou, who is Catholic, becomes deeply drawn to Piet Reydon, a Huguenot on a quest for his faith. One day I am listening to one of my favorite British podcasts and they are interviewing Kate Moss, the author of this book series and I was captivated by her discussion. For Piet has a dangerous mission of his own, and he will need Minou’s help if he is to get out of La Cité alive. Según palabras de la autora, esta trilogía comienza con esta entrega desarrollada en la ciudad medieval de Carcasona en 1562 y concluirá, abarcando más de trescientos años de historia, en Sudáfrica en 1862.Languedoc, region in Southern France, was marked by Cathars Inquisitions before the 14th century and after the 15th century the region experienced another Crusade now against Huguenots (French Protestants), who seemed to be putting the strongest resistance in this particular region.

This takes place in the mid-1500's during the time of the religious wars in France between the Catholics and the Huguenots. When nineteen-year-old Minou Joubert receives an anonymous letter reading only SHE KNOWS THAT YOU LIVE, she realises she must decipher this mysterious message. Her books have been translated into thirty-seven languages and published in more than forty countries. I didn’t realise the religious wars of France were just as viscious and prolonged as in Britain during the same time period ( Tudors and Stuarts). The sale of customised goods or perishable goods, sealed audio or video recordings, or software, which has been opened.

The Huguenots (Protestants) and the Catholics of 16th century France hate each other for various reasons, and those with no strong religious sensibilities want only to profit from war. This is done exceptionally well, the feeling of threat and uncertainty faced by ordinary people on both sides more than just a backdrop for the main plot- from les oubliettes to tortured confessions and street violence, it's a precarious time when anyone could be your enemy and every word you say might be monitored for blasphemy. At the end of the book, all ends well for the heroes, and they're beloved, and most villains are defeated. I admit, I did miss the mixture of past and present characters here, which has become so synonymous with Mosse’s storytelling, however, her ability to produce characters that are instantly relatable, down to earth and likeable still holds true.

Minou is great and I loved that she acted demure enough to blend in seamlessly in the current French society no matter where she was…but beneath all that “proper-ness” was a backbone of steel and GOD HELP ANYONE who tried to hurt her loved ones. Not being able to make any sense of this whatsoever, she puts it out of her mind, unaware she is in grave danger. It was sweet, but seemed QUITE unfounded…however, ignoring that little issue, the last quarter of the book really picked up the pace and made me MUCH more invested in the characters and their story, as everyone actually came together instead of being scattered all across the map. This set in France around a Catholic Girl Minou Joubert sent a strange letter SHE KNOWS THAT YOU LIVE.The Burning Chambers is the first in Kate Mosse’s new series, set in a similar historical time period as her earlier series, but this time entirely in France during the bloody wars between French Huguenots and Catholics. Above all, though, The Burning Chambers is a tour de force, a compelling adventure that views the past with insight, compassion and humour, and reminds us of the variety of women’s voices so often forgotten in the official accounts. Bringing sixteenth-century Languedoc vividly to life, Kate Mosse’s number one bestselling novel The Burning Chambers is a gripping story of love, betrayal, war, adventure, conspiracies and divided loyalties. Even my sleep was bookended with it, reading late into the night and waking up to read more over breakfast. She has received an anonymous letter bearing an unknown crest and the cryptic message: “She knows that you live.
