Description

After the earthquakes collapsed Skavenblight and buried it under the foul waters, it was clear that the Skaven would have to expand. The calamity only worsened the food shortages and limited living space. And so, the Skaven spread throughout the Old World, migrating to new lands to find resources and to expand their control over the world. [9a] For the last color to add to the stone, I used VMA Medium Olive. I concentrated this color along the bottoms, under ledges, and near the vines, where moss would likely grow the most.

Spray a smaller highlight in the same corner with a brighter blue, such as Lothern Blue or Baharroth Blue. The majority of Skavenblight exists underground in unfathomable levels, caverns and shafts. No map could hope to account for the many districts or the constantly changing locations of lairs, breeding pits, or strongholds, all connected by an intertwining network of tunnels gnawed out between sections. The deeper levels can only be reached by cages attached to massive chains and lowered into the depths. The armour and a couple of the larger chinks were highlighted with old Fiery Orange [ Fire Dragon Bright]. At this point, you could stop if you don’t want to add any staining. You’ve got a heavily worn coat that has been through years of battles. If you do want to add staining, first paint along the bottom of the coat using Nuln Oil, leaving a ragged splotchy edge where the coat has been dragged through mud or water. Credit: Evan “Felime” Siefring The Plague Monks of Clan Pestilens are considered the third most influential political force in Skavenblight. Though their district is small and isolated, the area they inhabit is considered more of a religious quarter then one of commerce like their rivals in Clan Moulder or Clan Skryre. [1a] Bilious Basilica [ ] Clan Eshin holds the smallest district out of the four major clans in Skavenblight, but theirs is a highly secretive and hidden location, with only a few knowing of its exact whereabouts. I LOVE the roses on this model. They really tie everything together, and doing them was one of my favorite parts. I painted the leaves first with VGA Goblin Green then painted the roses themselves with VMC Flat Red. Then I washed both the leaves and flowers with Nuln oil. Your highlights have now been dulled down a bit. Now add some new ones on top using Skavenblight Dinge, Gorthor Brown mix, and mixes of the two. You’re roughly repeating your earlier steps at this point. Credit: Evan “Felime” Siefring But such wealth and prosperity only attracts the worst of the Skaven race, giving incentive to the greatest population of cutthroats, thieves, outlaws, bandits, renegades, corrupt officials, and assassins than all the other Skaven strongholds combined. Such lawlessness and civil unrest has resulted in the city being mired a constant power-struggle between untold numbers of factions vying for control over much of the city's mineral and political wealth. The skin was washed with old Ogryn Flesh [ Reikland Fleshshade is close but slighty less reddish, Warpaints Flesh Wash would also make a good replacement].

Color Charts Vallejo Game Color Dark Fleshtone [ Doombull Brown] was painted directly into the recesses of the armour. Then, a small piece of blister sponge was ripped off, dabbed into paint and carefully “stamped” on the armour to add a chipped armour effect – this technique is called sponge weathering. Wipe any excess paint and don’t overdo the effect. Basecoat the lights white and apply contrast: Gryph-Charger Grey for the whites, Gryph-Hound Orange for the turn signals and Baal Red for the rear lights.

That’s a whole lot of information. Let’s cut to the chase and start looking at some ways all that knowledge can inform your painting choices. At this point, it looks like the coat is wet. To turn this into a stain, take some of the same paints you used to define the upper edge, and glaze below your stain, leaving a slightly faded, feathered edge up to the darkest edge of the stain. I would recommend doing this in a stage or two, so you get a gentle fade rather than an abrupt line. Credit: Evan “Felime” Siefring Skin: VGC Pale Flesh washed with Guilliman Flesh thinned with Lahmian Medium, extreme highlights with VMC Pale Sand (Less successful on this old metal model than on newer plastics) Multiple thin coats of Army Painter Lava Orange [ Troll Slayer Orange] were applied over the orange basecoat. This will take a few layers for an even coverage. Clan Skryre maintains one of its largest engineering colleges in Skavenblight, and many of the clan’s inventions are designed and built here. The Grey Seers call Skavenblight their home, and they exert an inordinate amount of control over the entire metropolis.

With the template set for the central figure, the only challenges here would be the bevvy of details on the model and his attendant weirdos. I’ll break down how I painted Helbrecht first, then talk through what went into his shared-base running crew an lastly, the base itself. I had these fellas in subassemblies to make painting them easier, as there was no way to get to all the sundry parts of each model without doing so. There’s a bit of color mixing for the various fabrics here as I really wanted them to look smooth, but you do you. I could then move on to the remainder of my airbrush work on his armor. I feel like Helbrecht doesn’t quite have the traditional gold that I’d paint my custodes, Sanguinius, or Sanguinary guard with, instead having more of a brass color. I used Scale 75 Victorian Brass as a fitting basecoat, and decided the paint has enough sheen and there are plenty of crevices for a wash to shade so I didn’t need an airbrushed highlight. NOTE TO NON AIRBRUSH HAVERS: To replicate this without an airbrush, take a cheap craft brush, get a little bit more paint on it than you would drybrush, and stipple the mottling patterns onto the stone. Expect this to take longer than using an airbrush, and destroy your craft brush. A bit of messiness doesn’t matter all that much, as the wash and drybrush afterwards will cover up myriad sins. Step 2: RailingsDuring the month or two that these guys have been sitting on my painting desk I acquired a couple of “new” brushes. One of these was a big and soft Games large shade brush. It worked really well as a dry brush and speeded up this stage of the painting quite a bit. It’s worth noting though, that this brush is not subtle – paint would often be hiding away inside the brush and you could get left with big streaks across your model. This was OK in the end as they introduced a kind of natural chaos to the paintwork. Then I did the same with VMA Burnt Umber. I concentrated this a little on the undersides of ledges and on the bottoms of walls and buildings where more dirt would accumulate, letting this color do triple duty as stone color, dirt, and shading. We’ve taken a look at abrasion and staining explicitly, and incorporated some elements of conditioning through the fading and layers of scratches. Burnishing isn’t something you’ll be using often on 40k models. Most places that are constantly rubbing against soft surfaces, such the side of a leather bag pressed against the body, are hidden because they’re pressed up against those soft surfaces. Old leather shoes can also become burnished on the toe and heel from years of polishing. However, you won’t see this often on soldiers. Light leather, where it will be most visible, isn’t popular for military footwear as it shows stains easily and is harder to maintain. The toes and heels of combat boots are also constantly getting beaten up, so abrasion will typically wipe out any burnishing that appears. That said, if you’re painting a rogue trader, high commander, or other imperial noble, you might want to incorporate burnishing, as it can be quite pretty. Because of how pretty it can be, it’s often emulated using dyes on dress shoes, rather than waiting for years of wear and polishing to do their magic.
