I was torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one. I did really like it, but there were some parts that dragged for me. The fighting scenes were intense and entertaining, but they were followed by some moments where not much happened.

This book was a bit mixed with the pacing, sometimes it was spot on with the amount of stories and characters, but at other times it did seem to drag and the overall duration might have been better if it had been shorter with a bit more ruthlessness during the editing phase.

There was a ton of action, but when things slowed down, the main characters were still under a lot of stress and pressure. I felt like I needed to take breaks in between reading it, and it makes sense because it was originally serialized. I thought the pacing was off because of this, but not enough to take too much away from my enjoyment. When he pulled into the McDonald’s, Jon only had the usual cares on his mind. His sister. The bills. A career with seemingly nowhere to go. In short, I'm incredibly thankful that I wound up finding him and being able to work on this, and I hope that the cover is as eye-catching for others as it is for me! And on the more serious side, a letter left behind by the secondary lead after the main character decides to take an active role in their magical society: And the longer I stayed here, doing this instead of fixing something, the more the knowledge that I was the imposter here sank deeper–the imposter in the Tower, yeah, but…in my own life, too. When she stepped into view, every step was unerring, her head held high. I saw Hatim wilt as she strode toward him. “L-Lady,” he whispered. He cleared his throat. “U-Um. I’m not sure what this is about, but I assure you-” The second installment in the series, Wanderer, is already available in novel form, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

The novel isn't perfect. I don't think any novel is. Out of all the books I read, I wouldn't even consider it among the "best." However, it is very good, engaging, and deserves recognition, regardless of any issues it currently has. White has the ability to world-build in a realistic, relate-able way. The locations that the author develops are descriptive enough to allow you to picture them, but not so specific that it drowns out the story. In short, the world-building is just right. Aside from that, White shows great skill in developing the main characters in a realistic and organic way. I don't want to say how specifically, as it may spoil some of the plot, but the shift in morality and responses from the characters to various situations undoubtedly shows changes in their character throughout the novel; these changes are realistic and slow enough that you find yourself agreeing with them, even though you probably also agreed with their previous, conflicting, character choices. My heart sank a little at the sight of her. To her, that was exactly the situation, probably. This was a horrible mistake, sure–but just another day’s work. What could I say, though? No? She wasn’t likely to take that with grace, and…as much as the thought of what might follow turned my stomach, the guy had screwed up pretty big here. My mind was a blur as I slid out into the cold, walking towards the front door. Drive-through would have been faster, almost certainly. But if my sister was going to make me play personal chauffeur, then it was my obligation to at least make it painful for her. She could wait while I ate my dinner. Fair was fair. Each of my novels that I've written (six books across 3 series) originally started as a writing prompt, actually, and was then published chapter by chapter to my readers as they were written. Silvertongue was no different, and sometimes it's tough to say exactly where that spark comes from. But a simple concept was presented - an immortal or very ancient being, working behind the counter at a McDonald's - and then my mind went crazy trying to come up with rational explanations for how that would be possible. Why he'd be there. How he's so old.Casey: Next? Well, Silvertongue went and grew beyond my original concept, as my projects tend to do! So, I'm currently planning on its series, Remnants of Magic, being a four-book series. That leaves me at about 90k words into book 2 right now (Wanderer), and promises to take a while yet. Casey: No doubt hybrid will be the safe answer for most authors, naturally - but I do fall more on the 'pantser' end of the spectrum than plotting, for sure. When I start writing a piece (once I've written the first chapter, usually) I try to come up with a central conflict for the book/series, and then a loose destination or ending that I'll be working towards. Would you just calm down?” the bearded cop said, smiling at me as he stepped forward. “No one’s going to hurt you, all right? What’s your name?” The cast of characters is large, but they get introduced just a few at a time, so it's pretty easy to get a handle on each one before more join the fray. Each character is very nicely defined with personality, skills, ambitions, motivations and cares. This is just as true for each of the antagonists - of which there are many - and in a story like this, that's a crucial element. I speak a lot of languages, all right?” I said, craning my head until I could look at him. “That’s all. I don’t know what you heard. All I know is-”
