The Happy Family: The gripping new psychological crime

It's not always easy to keep up appearances and live up to expectations when you close yourself off and struggle to be honest even with yourself. But what had me scratching my head was why would Beth take the word of the mother who had only just reappeared in her life (after being absent for the most part) over that of her friends who she knew far better in any case? But in this book, you get to not only see what the dynamic is, you get to be there as the family works on taking significant steps to resolve it. It’s a terrible cycle and I was desperate for Beth to find the answers to why she thought someone is watching her. Even though the plot of her books are always fast paced, the dialogue is stilted and when not invested in the characters it is very hard to really enjoy the story. But are those kids only the ones to inherit the will, or are there other people who could be suspect of this killings? And Beth believes it is only a matter of time before her past catches up to her and her secret shame is revealed for all to see. Good thing about this book is that it is easy to read, so we all finished the book faster then we planned, excluding one girl who DNFed it.

However, strange things almost immediately start happening- Beth is misplacing things, becoming more forgetful, and questioning the allegiance of her close group of friends.

I could understand it as a joke between Suhani and her dad, but outside of that it definitely bugged me a little bit. Even though I was able to predict who did it, I think it was a very entertaining read and one of Shari Lapena’s best! There are so many hints dropped throughout the story that lead the reader trying to figure our exactly what is going on, tying some in knots in the process.

As they encounter public humiliation, gossiping aunties, and self-doubt, the Joshi family must rely on each other like never before. What a Happy Family centers on the Joshis, an Indian American family living in Atlanta, and explores how our family dynamics play a role in our decisions and who we become. Deepak may be an excellent psychiatrist, but has he failed to see the mental health challenges within his own family?Eldest daughter Catherine and her husband, leave in a huff, followed closely behind by beleaguered middle child, Dan and his wife, Lisa. Maybe I just relate to much to Beth as all her friends are around her mothers age and its strange because as you read about her neighbours and work colleagues it just makes sense. They were never a happy family, thanks to their capricious father and neglectful mother, but perhaps one of them is more disturbed than anyone knew. So thrilled to be reunited with her long lost mother after thirty years, the questions she had about her absent years and why she left just disappear into the background as unimportant.

Certain values fall into place naturally; if you're married, you and your husband probably committed to each other in the first place because of values that both of you share.

While I may not have fully connected with the characters, I definitely connected to the message it gave. A knock on the door is about to turn her life upside down as an unfamiliar woman stands on her doorstep. Being happy as a family is something deeper than simply having fun together or feeling the immediate euphoria of a joyful event like opening presents on Christmas morning," explains REDBOOK Love Network expert Scott Haltzman, M. Thrilled at the opportunity to re-establish the relationship, Beth invites her mother to move into her home . Additionally, the way in which South Asian culture was depicted and appreciated, while still breaking down why some of the old fashioned thinking and traditions are problematic was done so well!
