Description

Fujifilm has taken the right step forward with this lens design and it also solves all the problems that many of their lenses suffer from, such as very loose aperture rings, no weather sealing, and slow AF. Sure, it wasn’t a bad lens, but once I sunk deeper into photography, I made the shift to a prime lens: the Nikon 50mm 1. This is my review of what is still my favourite lens to have mounted on my camera, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I think it will be yours. I am thinking this would be an awesome lens to leave on the camera for most situations and keeping the 56 for dedicated portraits or when I need a tad more reach.

As being more budget conscience this is a great lens the focusing is fast and quite the image quality is excellent. It’s great, results from this lens are very satisfying for me and I don’t have any complains for AF on my X-T10. This high image quality is coupled with the compact design which is also is weather/dust-resistant, and can work in temperatures down to -10°C.There’s a barely noticeable amount of vignetting wide-open, but that quickly goes away as you stop down.

Focusing is also internal, so no front end popping in and out like your Granny doing the Hokey Cokie.Onto the lens design: this lens features one of the things I don’t like about some of the Olympus lenses, namely that the front of the lens is smaller than the back of the lens, leaving it with a deflated look. Another sample of the foreground and background bokeh and how the swirling effect influences the out of focus areas. It does everything as expected, it’s light, super sharp, silent, quick to focus and you can shoot in all kinds of weather. The weight and size differences are insignificant in my book and it comes down to optical performance.

The marked aperture ring allows you to get the most out of the Fujifilm user experience, and it’s small enough that you won’t release it’s attached to your camera and hanging around your neck. Its hard to say if it’s the lens or the cameras, but in dark conditions you can still get som occasional focus hunting. In the samples section, as well as in the paraglider shot above, you can see how well it handles shooting directly against the sun.Nifty Fifty” has been used to describe a dozen 50MM lenses for the last number of decades by numerous manufactures. So shooting for sun stars, or nice street light stars will yield not the best results unless you’re willing to sacrifice some sharpness by stopping down to f11 and f16.
