It’s not perfect, of course – it can get very hot when recording continuous 4K footage, to the point where it automatically shuts down. The sensor is also still the same size as before, so it can be a struggle to get usable footage or slo-mo in very low light. And there probably aren’t enough new features for GoPro Hero 6 owners to consider upgrading.

In some cases, there’s more than one model number that can be used in a particular camera. For instance, some batteries have been tweaked and replaced with newer iterations, along the lines of AHDBT-201 and AHDBT-301. In those cases, I’ve listed the most recent iteration, which is both the newer version and is generally more widely available. Things Worth Knowing About GoPro Batteries Once you’ve given your stream a name, you’ll need to either connect to a Wi-Fi network or use your phone’s data connection in ‘personal hotspot’ mode. So far I’ve only tested it on office Wi-Fi, so if you’re out in the wilds (a GoPro’s natural habitat) then there’s always a chance your network signal won’t be strong to support streaming. I’ll give this feature more of a test in those conditions and update this review when I have. Video and image qualityWhile the GoPro HERO 7 White is a rugged and really well put together camera, unfortunately it's now starting to show its age. While its video and photo capturing capabilities are good enough for a wide range of uses, there are plenty of other cameras that can shoot at higher resolutions and cost around the same price or less.

So how well do all of these new toys work? Let’s start with that modestly named stabilisation, Hypersmooth. The same goes for external battery chargers. The GoPro Dual Charger for the HERO8 batteries, for example, won’t work with HERO9 batteries. (But the Dual Charger for HERO9 batteries will work with the HERO10 batteries.) In reality, this means you’ll get around 1hr 45mins of continuous video at 1080p/30fps, which is about par for an action camera. It’s most restrictive when it comes to shooting 4K/60fps – I only got 45 minutes of continuous recording in this mode from a charge, although the camera became largely unusable after 35 minutes due to overheating. Unlike Sony’s FDR-X3000, there’s no optical stabilisation behind Hypersmooth – it’s all done electronically. It works by cropping your image by five per cent, which means you lose the edges of your shot, with the benefit being that the camera then has the wiggle room to counter any shakes or vibrations that are sensed by its giro.While both of its fancier HERO 7 stablemates have the ability to shoot 4K video, the White version's maximum video resolution is 1440p at 60FPS – there are also plenty of more recent budget action cameras that can shoot in 4K too. Unless you're planning to run your footage on a 4K tv or monitor though, the HERO 7 White's resolution is still more than good enough for sharing clips with friends or posting on the web, and the camera does a great job of capturing sharp, dynamic video. If you’re new to GoPros, it’s a natural question whether all GoPro batteries are the same. And there’s a simple answer: no, they’re not. It’s important that you get the correct model battery for your specific model of GoPro camera. But if you don’t want to faff about with editing, then the ‘out of camera’ footage will be absolutely fine for most non-professional needs. There’s more than one way to charge GoPro batteries. I’ve included the corresponding external battery charger models in the table above, but the batteries can also be charged directly in the camera (with a USB charger cable). The charger models I’ve listed above are the official ones put out by GoPro, but there are many aftermarket external charger cradles that also work well. This isn’t the latest action camera in the series though, as GoPro has since launched the GoPro Hero 8. But since the latter costs a lot more cash, the GoPro Hero 7 may well retain the accolade as our top recommended option.
