Having a healthy lawn enables it to withstand many lawn issues, such as weeds, moss growth, disease and drought. Apply by hand or through a spreader in mid-season on areas subject to intense use. Also granules have a longer shelf life and are less prone to deterioration compared to liquid fertilisers. If the winter we have experienced has been cold and dry but still with a good amount of light then damage to the turf will be considerably less than if the winter is a wet and cloudy one due to the damage that would be caused from low light conditions and excess water from rainfall.

There are two types of lawn fertilisers to choose from. Organic fertilisers are more costly but have many advantages over the alternatives. For convenience apply the seed and fertiliser on the same day though it is usually better to apply the fertiliser once the seed has germinated. Never feed before seeding. If weeds are growing within the lawn, control them using a selective weed killer to make sure that you are not going to harm the lawnBoth require warmth and water but the first is down to how well you've planted your seed and the second is down to nutrition. Getting strong roots is half the battle which requires phosphate and nitrogen and getting healthy leaves requires potassium and nitrogen. Therefore adding the right fertiliser is very beneficial. For over seeding If you wish to feed and kill moss at the same time then Winter Green Fertiliser is safe but can stain feet up to 72 hours after application.

The soil needs to have some moisture in it for these tests so do these tests after some rain. Test 1:September or October are the target months for applying your autumn fertiliser. Once again national temperature and weather patterns apply, but as a rule wait until the rains start in late August or September, and then apply your lawn fertiliser. Dependent on where you live you’ll find some years this may mean early September and other years late October. We suggest using either Nutrigrow Spring Lawn (granular) or the Spring Gem Fertiliser (soluble) from our fertiliser range. Both benefit from balanced formulations, giving your lawn everything it needs to help prevent weeds and moss from establishing. You can spread by hand or through a fertiliser spreader (see ‘How to use a fertiliser spreader’ guide for further guidance).If you are seeding a new lawn then it's highly recommended to use a Pre-seeder fertiliser prior to sowing the grass seed. Many fertilisers work on a slow release basis, however these do vary from one fertiliser to another. Some gardeners may prefer to fertilise only once during the growing season in spring, using a very slow release fertiliser. However, this is not always the best option. It is recommended that you fertilise your lawn around 4 times per year, as mentioned above, as this gives you a greater control over the amount of nutrients delivered to your lawn according to its health and weather conditions. Fertiliser that is sprayed as a liquid is traditionally used to top up the nutrients in the lawn. A bit like you having an apple or a Kit-Kat between main meal, though some people do use liquid fertilisers as a regular monthly feed with good results.
