It is very hard to say which is the best flute book as each flute book focuses on different things, whether that be theory, a huge range of songs, duets or specifics on the instrument.

However, if you are looking for something that teaches you all the basic aspects of flute technique and music theory then this is a great book! Smaller pupils may have difficulty holding the flute even using a curved head joint because their fingers are so small. It’s up to you the teacher as to how you handle this. No matter how insistent the pupil or the parent is, sometimes it is better to delay starting smaller pupils: they can do so much damage trying to play an instrument that is too big for them! The Rubank elementary method is one of the original flute method books out there. It was published in 1990 and you can definitely tell that this is the case! This book uses a very traditional method and covers all aspects of learning the flute. It is very clear with useful fingering charts throughout. One of my favourite aspects of this book is that many tunes use just one note. There is a whole chapter of pieces just written for the note B, which as a flute teacher is incredibly useful if you have a student that is struggling to make a sound. It helps the student to see progress without having the pressure of learning loads of new notes. This can include use of specialised materials and processes to enhance the feel, response and playability of the instrument. The flute is one of the most popular instruments around the world, which can be attributed to its simplicity and pleasing sound. This instrument is a great starting point for a child to learn music
