Steamforged Resident Evil 2 The Board Game: Core Game
- Brand: Unbranded
Description
The scenario lasts until the players either succeed or become overwhelmed by the horrific creatures stalking the halls. Some enemies will start on your same tile while others will wait through closed doors or spawn later due to different card effects. Items can be found on the A and B markers. Game Experience: Based on the iconic survival horror video game series, Resident Evil 3 is another adaptation by Steamforged Games. The game lets up to 4 players team up and take on the hordes of undead enemies as they try to escape Racoon city. Like Into the Darkness, Bleak Outpost includes six gripping new scenarios and adds 8 hours of extra gameplay to your Resident Evil: The Board Game campaigns. So, if you’re thinking we’ve recreated fast paced action and resource management, but are wondering where the atmosphere is, look no further.
But what is Resident Evil: The Board Game? And, more importantly: Can you survive the horror? What is Resident Evil: The Board Game? The mansion is only the beginning. You might think an isolated building at the edge of the grounds would be untouched by the evils elsewhere; a lonely safehouse. You’d be wrong. Resource management, rising tension, jump scares, atmospheric environments, narrative, isolation, strategic depth of movement. Combat is unavoidable at times and ammo isn’t exactly common later on in the scenarios. There is also no guarantee that you will kill the enemy you shoot, like many Steamforged Games, the combat is dice roll-based on a tier system; the stronger the weapon, the higher the tier of the dice associated to it. Many enemies only need one shot on them to kill them, but rolling that double hit marker result isn’t guaranteed, and spending three turns missing or simply staggering the enemy can be infuriating. Fail to escape and you’ll inevitably have the opposition trying to nibble on your insides. Being young was awkward, when you weren’t hiding behind the controller that is! Remember not knowing how to talk to someone you liked? So you’d awkwardly sort of be around them and existed continually, never making progress or effort to let them know you were there? The T-00 Tyrant doesn’t. He has no fear. No reservations. He’s a successful go-getter and a man on a mission. He knows what he wants, and he wants you. (Dead!)If you find yourself in the same square as an enemy — whether they’ve moved toward you in a previous turn, or you’ve stepped in voluntarily — you’ll need to perform an evade roll to get past them. The B-Files Expansion for Resident Evil 2: The Board Game gives you the other side of the story to the core’s, centring entirely around the adventure from the other side of the police car. You inevitably go through Raccoon Police Department, the sewer systems and Underground Laboratory. All through which your new admirer is hot on your trail. There are fewer scenarios in this expansion, but don’t think the Resident Evil universe has given you a break because of this! You’ll still have the disgustingly hideous monstrosities from the core game to deal with, alongside Birkin Stage 3, who is as deadly as ever. Opening doors and exploring new rooms feels unnerving. Rolling the dice and consulting the chart to see what horrors you have disturbed in this area is a tense experience.
Managing your inventory is crucial to progression in the game too. Of course the classic item boxes are here but your character has very limited space for items. Do you want to play it safe and keep the healing items? How about that new big gun? You just found an important item, what do you give up to take it? But if you’re brand new to this tabletop world of survival horror, you’re joining us at the perfect time. Resident Evil 3 is a challenging and intense co-operative experience. Despite a lengthly set up, fiddly tokens and at times harshly difficult, it is a fantastic adaption of one of the pioneers of the survival horror genre. Event cards can be drawn which display small story like texts and offer players difficult choices with dire consequences. I found these incredibly fun and daunting as I wanted to see what events would occur but also dread the outcome of my decisions. Final ThoughtsThe main new mechanic for this expansion is the introduction of Mr X. Unlike other enemies within the game, his pursuit is relentless and he appears in every scenario. His only goal is to kill you and the other survivors, and he is pretty good at his job! The introduction of Mr X into a scenario is done through the encounter table or through specific Tension Cards. Either way, you’re not going to be able to avoid him for long! Now, if all this sounds pretty straightforward so far, it’s because we’ve deliberately kept the rules as user-friendly and intuitive as possible. But don’t let that fool you.
Gameplay too is very close. Although the major difference is that this game supports up to 4 players rather than being a solo adventure it still manages to recreate the horror and survival feeling of the video game.

One noticeable improvement for me is the slightly clearer map boards and item tokens. However the dark, murky looking map of Racoon City, while being very thematic and true to its source material, may be a little hard to read for some players. Learn When To Flight Or Flee And with each board game, we’ve iterated on the survival horror engine and mechanics to create a deeper, darker, and more immersive experience. Dare you step into the darkness and take on these two huge new bosses, so big they engulf multiple squares? The tension will slowly rise though a small token that acts as the city’s “Terror level”. Not only does this put a timer on the campaign play but it also can ramp up the effects of certain tension cards.
The insert for this game, while still not being perfect, is an improvement over the previous entry. Slots for many zombie enemies, monsters, characters and of course, Nemesis himself hold the miniatures in place nicely. Spaces for the item, tension and event cards plus all the tokens mean the games set up time is reduced. You’ve heard the rumours. You’ve seen the signs. You may even have received a mysterious note, many months ago. There are even a few cards that break the fourth wall, including one that cautions you to keep quiet when discussing your plans, in case enemies hear... This board game is a beautiful homage to Resident Evil’s classic survival horror feel. Whether you’re a fan of Resident Evil or not, if you’re fond of horror or tactical scenario-based adventures, this may very well be for you! For some of us, the main element of this game is nostalgia. Regardless to the survival horror elements, the one thing you’ll feel if you’ve played the original is nostalgia.
