The drip-stop function on the spout was handy, although juice did continue to accumulate inside the unit, making clean-up a little messier. A handy drip-stop means the juicing bowl can be sealed without spillage. No cleaning brush is provided, but that hardly feels necessary here, since the filter attached to the squeezing chamber can be easily cleaned with running water. A bunch of grapes was juiced efficiently – another benefit of a slow juicer over its centrifugal counterparts, which tend to throw lighter bits of fruit around without necessarily squeezing the most out of them. Without the right supporting literature, it can be easy to lose interest in a new kitchen gadget, but the Avance has that covered.

Compared to a centrifugal juicer, a slow juicer squeezes more concentrated juice with more fiber and the juice yield is higher with a slow juicer. On the other hand, a juice from a juicer is ready faster, because you do not have to cut the fruit and vegetables, thanks to the large filling funnel. In the world of effective slow juicers, the Philips HR1889 Viva Collection is a relatively affordable option. It may not be the best at processing hard fruits/vegetables – such as carrots – but it excels at leafy greens and soft fruit. This proved slightly better, resulting in double the yield, but there was still an episode of wobbling. In fact, I had to turn the machine off and on again before it settled. As recommended in the instructions, I alternated juicing leafy greens with hard fruits, processing apples in-between. Although the resulting juice was clear of any kale stalks, I found some apple peel in there – a further sign of the disturbance caused. The machine produced some amusing squeaking sounds while processing the leafy greens, but that is just part of the process and still more pleasant to the ear than the drill-like noise of some centrifugal juicers. Turn fruits and vegetables into healthy drinks that you and your family will enjoy. Homemade juices with fresh ingredients can contain up to 90% * of the nutrients in fruits and vegetables.

Thanks to the unique MicroMasticating technology, Philips Slow Juicers grind and open up the cells to extract maximum nutrition. Masticating juicers – those that ‘chew’ fruit and veg rather than shred and spin it – have traditionally been unwieldy machines that require dedication when it comes to cleaning. However, the Avance is different, with much of its design geared towards minimal maintenance and ease of use. Juicing carrots was probably the noisiest process here, producing a sound akin to a chair being dragged across a hard floor. While making several different juices, I had to empty the bin often. This wasn’t a massive chore, but it could prove annoying if you’re wanting to make several glasses of juice in one go – perhaps if you’re juicing for the whole family. A bit of pressure was needed to juice the carrots and apples, especially when half of an apple ended up core side down. Two-thirds of a large cucumber made the juicer wobble a little, but it was sturdy enough to take it. The resulting juice was fibrous and tasty. Two buttons sit at the top of the machine: one for turning the juicer on and off, the other for the reverse function, which needs to be held down should any fruit or veg become lodged during the juicing process. It may seem a little obvious, but a slow juicer is exactly what its name suggests. It is a special form of juice press which slowly cuts fruit and veg into small pieces and squeezes all of the juice from them. The Philips slow juicers not only squeeze the fruit but also extract juice from the fruit pulp. Like other Philips juicers, it comes with a recipe booklet and features neat touches such as integrated cord storage.

Setting up this juicer, I wondered how much it could fit. The answer is more than enough. At 2.1 litres, the pulp container isn’t the biggest on the market, but it’s plenty big enough, with Philips claiming you can juice up to 3 litres before having to empty it. If anything, you’ll have to get another jug first, since the standard jug can accommodate only 1 litre of juice.Six medium carrots on setting “2” yielded 400ml of juice, while two Granny Smith apples added just under 160ml. I started by making a double portion of the Farmers’ Market juice from the recipe booklet, which contains strawberries, apples, carrots and some cucumber. The Philips Avance HR1922 is a high-end centrifugal juicer. It sits within the upmarket Avance range – which also includes the highly rated Philips Avance MicroMasticating Juicer HR1947 – versus the more affordable and less powerful Viva Collection. The first thing you’ll notice about the Avance HR1922 is its compact form. This juicer has clearly been designed with appearance in mind. While many juicers consist of two integral but separate parts, the juicing unit and the pulp bin, Philips has built the pulp bin into the main body of the juicer. Before cleaning, the juicer can be rinsed out by filling the juicing unit with water and letting the motor run. This helps to pre-clean the juicing screw and the squeezing chamber.

While I was busy admiring the compact design and the little details that the Avance HR1922 gets right (the drip-stop spout, the cord storage, the spotless clean-up – I can go on), it also managed to deliver some outstanding juice. The Viva HR1889’s most obvious competitor is the slightly pricier Philips Avance MicroMasticating juicer. The latter can also be used to prepare nut milk and to juice softer and starchier fruits such as mangoes and bananas, which aren’t suitable for the HR1889 Viva. Meanwhile, the more affordable Panasonic MJ-L500 Slow Juicer comes with an additional frozen attachment for making sorbets. However, the citrus fruit resulted in a lot of juice, with only a light layer of foam. The use of the fibre filter resulted in a juice that was quite thin, with only a little pulp. The amount of ejected pulp was minimal in relation to the amount of fruit and only slightly moist, while the drink itself was intensely citrusy and refreshing. Note that the machine isn’t terribly noisy in operation, unlike loud centrifugal juicers, and it’s possible to have a conversation while it’s doing its thing. The Avance HR1922 is also dishwasher-safe – although after the pre-clean rinse you’ll unlikely need to use it. Three medium carrots produced a somewhat disappointing 100ml of juice. While the juice was clear, with no extra pulp, the carrot pulp in the bin was still moist enough for me to use in a carrot cake.
