His claim is that Britain, rather than, say, France or Germany, “the country with the greatest influence on wine and drink in general”. The book is full of interesting vignettes and factoids (if history is your thing), such as how techniques for adding bubbles to Champagne were actually developed in England for making bubbly cider. You may also close a racket temporarily (“P” key when a racket’s panel is opened) if police suspicion gets too high. As this print on demand book is reprinted from a very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. So raise a glass to Britain, the Empire of Booze, whose alcoholic innovations are some of its greatest, lasting gifts to the world.

I take the author’s point in some specific drinks such as english porter but for others he examines the British influence is drawing a long bow (no slightly obscure pun intended).I would definitely recommend to anyone with an interest in how alcohol is made (rather than just an interest in drinking it).

Read about how we owe the champagne we drink today to seventeenth-century methods for making sparkling cider; how madeira and India Pale Ale became legendary for their ability to withstand the long, hot journeys to Britain’s burgeoning overseas territories; and why whisky became the familiar choice for weary empire builders who longed for home. Your different money-making rackets have a few different upgrades available that increase their profit.

I was happier to learn that Guinness derived from the English porter (dark beer), which is making a comeback now. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works. If you are just starting to learn about wine you need two books: “ The Oxford Companion to Wine” (Jancis Robinson) and “ The World Atlas of Wine” (Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson).I really liked the sections "Drinking the Empire" in which he gives suggestions for each of the drinks, especially those he thinks would be most like what used to be drunk at the time. it's an ambitious undertaking, but [Jeffreys] achieves it with a sharp eye and an understated humorous touch I rather liked. Every month or so themarketing bumf from Majestic Wine Warehouses comes through my door outlining their latest offers. Later colonists would attempt to ape the classic European wines in parts of the Empire with grape-growing climates.
