The word “terrier” comes from the old french name chien terrier – and translates to “earth dog” – indicating it’s purpose rather than to the breed itself. These dogs were meant to tunnel in search of vermin. Mars Double-Wide Coat King Stripping Comb for Dogs, 30-Blade: Newfoundland, Giant Schnauzer, Terriers, Wolfhounds, Collies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Terriers, Basset hounds, Belgian Malinois, Great Pyrenees, Afghans, Boxers, Spaniels (upper body), Saint Bernards, and similar coated dog breeds. This dog can be considered a large toy dog and, while it looks similar to the Maltese, does have some distinctions that make it a breed in and of itself. And although the fluffy white coat can intimidate potential dog owners who don’t like the idea of a lot of grooming, the Bichon Frise is surprisingly low-maintenance, meaning that they’re not big shedders and won’t be a hamper on that roommate of yours with dog allergies. Carding knives come in many shapes and sizes, and many stripping knives can be used for carding by changing from a pulling to a raking technique.

Grooming coordinates with this cycle to manually remove dead and loose hairs, while also allowing us to shape the coat to appear more stylish. Handstripping helps support the healthy growth of hair, but it’s helpful to understand how it helps. To do this let’s first explain the four stages of hair growth in dogs. Of course, this is not a call to neglect your pet’s basic needs in terms of hygiene and appearance. If you see that hand stripping simply does not work for you, then by all means, visit the grooming salon. We ‘card’ as the very first step in the process to remove excess undercoat and to allow for easier hand stripping with our stripping knives. Undercoat Rakes To use the Stripping Comb, ensure the fur is free of knots and mats. Gently brush the hair in the direction of the fur growth. The blade of the will strip away straggly and unwanted hair leaving a smooth and neat coat. To ensure your dog has an enjoyable grooming session, start gently. Pause or end the grooming session if your dog becomes agitated. To use the Stripping Comb, ensure the fur is free of knots and mats. Gently brush the hair in the direction of the fur growth. The blade of the will strip away straggly and unwanted hair leaving a smooth and neat coat. Stripping too short, removing far too much coat, or using the wrong technique or tools are common mistakes. But what exactly makes them such popular, well-respected dogs… and does a strong breed always mean that a Labrador Retriever will be the right dog for you?

Finer blades are used for finer detail work (such as the face), while coarse blades are used for the body or large breeds. The aim of handstripping is to remove the older dull hairs that are in the exogen phase and are easier to pull out. To do this we use a stripping knife, grooming stone or by hand using a finger condom for grip. When performed by our professional groomers handstripping is completely painless for your dog. The Yorkshire Terrier was first bred in the 19th century in the county of Yorkshire, England to catch rats and other vermin in clothing mills. The Yorkshire Terrier was owned predominantly by the working class. In particular, they tended to live in the homes of professional weavers. An evolution of other terrier breeds, the Yorkshire Terrier can trace its heritage from the Waterside Terrier, Manchester Terrier and Paisley Terrier. So this sweet little pup has quite the pedigree.I often use an undercoat rake on pet Airedales, Lakelands, and Wire Foxes. Some breeds may not need undercoat removal. They’re simply a dull toothed comb that allows groomers to get a better grip (before stripping knives were widely available groomers would often use a dulled butter knife). The choice will largely fall between the 16 and 20 blade Coat King in most cases. Coat textures are likely to be of a variable nature and dependant on the individual animals used for the crossing.

Coat King combs can be used with great effect on several other hair-coated animals other than just cats and dogs. They are particularly effective when used on horses and ponies for maintaining manes and tails as well as the general body areas. A number of cattle exhibitors are discovering the benefits they offer in show coat and tail preparation. Coat Kings are also becoming increasingly used around the world for rabbits, hamsters and ferrets and they produce some highly effective results on many of the goat breeds When talking about hand stripping, pet owners tend to have a lot of questions at the beginning, especially if they are new to this type of grooming and they are hoping to do it themselves rather than simply going to a groomer to get the job done. We get it. This can all seem a little intimidating. There’s good reason for that. Hand stripping needs to be handled with care to work effectively. However, if you go into the process knowing what you are doing and what to expect, it doesn’t have to be an anxiety-inducing task. Having questions and concerns is important. That’s why we are here to alleviate your concerns and provide some answers. After you have hand stripped your dog, if you want his coat to be on the shorter side, you can scissor or clip the fur down further. However, some grooming experts don’t bother with this step, as it could end up changing the flow and the texture of the animal’s coat, thus making it harder for the coat to be able to do things like repel water and dirt. It’s probably healthiest to let the hair grow in naturally, however, some people are more interested in styling their dog than grooming. In that case, clip away. Just do so with caution. Groomers will grip hair between the flat of the blade and their thumb, and then gently pull in the direction of growth. The teeth help guide the coat into your finger and up onto the flat of the blade. Dachshunds also originated in Germany but unlike Poodles who retrieved the hunted, they were the hunters! When they branched out into Great Britain, they were bred to become companions rather than hunters. Today, they are mostly companion dogs who are always up for a good movie, cuddled snugly in your lap. Each individual blade is made from quality stainless steel and is fitted to a central bar at predetermined spaces to suit various coat textures. This bar is then fitted to the stainless steel head which is equipped with a comfortable smooth hard wood handle about 5-inch/13cm long, all of which forms a solid construction. Totally safe to use and when correctly applied enjoyed by both the operator and recipient. This includes most Terrier breeds, as well as some sporting or hound breeds. Many mixed terrier type dogs from southern areas also have a ‘strippable’ coat. Other people ask about bathing their dogs prior to hand stripping the coat. Simply put, it isn’t a good idea to bathe your pooch before you hand strip. The bath will end up softening your pet’s skin and fur, and when that happens, the coat will become more challenging to hand strip. Plus, it will be uncomfortable for your poor dog. You want their hair to be as dry and brittle as possible before hand stripping. This will make the process easier for you and less uncomfortable for your dog. Dry coats are already ideal for hand stripping – the hairs are coarse and loose enough, making them easy to come out in clumps. Wet hair, however, is bunched together, slippery, and can be a nightmare to pull out. So best not do it that way. Mars Original Coat King Stripping Comb for Dogs, 10-Blade: Collies, Schnauzers, Shepherds, Terriers, Wolfhounds, Sheepdogs, Akita Inu, Alaskan Malamute, Belgian Malinois, German Shepherd, Borzoi, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Chow-Chow, Dachshund, Griffon, Elkhound, Samoyed, Siberian Husky, Turnverein, Saint Bernard, and all Sheepdogs.

Catagen Phase – this is the TRANSITION PHASE when hair stops growing and the outer root sheath attaches to the hair Let’s go over a few pros and cons of dog insurance… we hope it will make the decision a bit clearer for you. Stripping is using a tool to hand strip. We use an assortment of hand stripping knives for different parts of the body. Always pull in the direction of the grain. Handstripping targets the older hairs that are in the exogen phase of growth. These older dull hairs are easy to pull out and by doing so they leave room for new stronger hairs to grow through. This ensures that the coat will have a fuller, shinier texture and a more vibrant colour Wiry coated breeds go through a cycle in which hair reaches a maximum length and is ready to be pulled.Staging is stripping different sections of the dog at different times so you get a desired result. For example: The longest parts of the coat are pulled first and left for 6-8 weeks, so the dog is in perfect coat for a dog show. Dogs will be pulled baby-skin smooth in those areas. The Coat King knives have rapidly become very highly popular in the UK as well as internationally (now sold in over 80 countries world wide!) both with professional groomers, and individual dog owners. They are far more relaxing to your hand than traditional knives especially on the wrist. Convinced that the Bichon Frise is a unique breed worthy of study yet? Good. Because we’re about to focus on the individual characteristics of this French breed that will help you to understand why so many people walk around with Maltese-looking dogs that actually have all the positive qualities of that other breed, the Bichon Frise. It’s important that you don’t bathe a wiry coat too often because it can cause the hair to dry out. When you bathe your dog, it’s important that you use a shampoo specifically formulated for wiry haired breeds due to the unique makeup of their coat. If your dog is dirty, it’s worth bathing and drying before grooming to make the job easier.
