Generally support gay marriage; support anti-discrimination laws to protect LGBT against workplace discrimination.

The Concert of Europe: The Concert of Europe was the political system in Europe, based on the balance of power concept, that lasted until the outbreak of World War I. It provided Europe for almost a century with peace (despite some minor conflicts). Senators are directly elected and serve six-year terms – there are no term limits in place and many serve for several decades. The longest serving US senator was Democrat Robert Byrd who represented West Virginia for 51 years before dying in office in 2010.

Socialism: A political and economic system where most property is owned by the state and a centralized planning agency that plans for all of society replaces the free market. Congress can impeach the president and Supreme Court justices, and must confirm the president’s nominations of justices. The legislative branch also act as the money-holders of the American budget, since they delegate governmental funds. If Congress was a parent and government programs were its children, Congress gives big and small allowances to its children. And if they misappropriate their funds, kind of like if they use their gas money to buy Slurpees, Congress can give more money to other programs instead.

Capitalism: An economic system that is also referred to as a free market economy. It’s the number-one economic system in the advanced industrialized world. Under capitalism, property, and the means of production, such as factories, are privately owned. Political culture: A set of attitudes and practices held by citizens that in turn shapes their political behavior in society. When Athens declared itself a Democracy, it did so by rebelling against the special interest oligarchs who had taken over and enslaved the people with debt. When Caesar became King, and Rome became a monarchy, it was because the senators were corrupt and pandered to special interests at the expense of the people. The main theme of both was wealth inequality. John Rawls, 1921–2002: Rawls created the concept of a theory of justice, arguing for a political system based on social justice. In 1971, Rawls’s A Theory of Justice was published.

Normative theory: A theory that looks at how things ought to and should be and not how they really are. Does he pass the elevator test? (If an elevator door opened in front of you and getting on meant you would ride alone with the candidate, would you get on?) International political economy (IPE): An interdisciplinary approach, incorporating the disciplines of political science and economics and relying on history, sociology, and even anthropology, to study the relationship between states in the international economic arena.

As there is so much work involved in governing a country, the Prime Minister needs support. The Prime Minister will select MPs from the House of Commons and members of the House of Lords to be ministers. The group made up of the Prime Minister and the most important ministers is called the cabinet. Together, the cabinet has the power to make all UK government decisions. The cabinet therefore governs the UK.The legislative branch is located in Congress, which is made up of two houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The legislative branch creates laws that pass through several layers of committees and review before being voted on by both houses of Congress and, if it passes, the president. The House of Representatives currently has 435 members, each of whom represents a district from the state that they are voting on behalf of. More populous states like California and Texas have more representatives than less populated states like Alaska and Wyoming. Even though the Senate only has 50 members, each state is still represented with two members from each. For a bill to go to the president’s office, both houses need to pass it. Representatives serve 2 year terms while senators serve 6 year terms, and can be elected into office as many times as their voters want.
