Description

You may come across the abbreviated version of the terms ‘lat-long’. Latitude and longitude references look like this: ‘50.855226 -1.402772’ and they are quite different to the grid references commonly used for determining points on an Ordnance Survey map. Using latitude and longitude is a more accurate method of pinpointing the exact location of a very specific place on the earth’s surface and is commonly used by satellite positioning systems and GPS devices. Latitude specifies the north-south position of a point and longitude the east-west position. Highlights: The north-western area of the Cotswolds Hills, the River Severn and the Offa’s Dyke Path To be sure there is no doubt or confusion about which National Grid you’re referring, when you quote the six-figure grid reference you should put the two letters of the area you are in before the numbers. Plan your route carefully before you set off by choosing a route that suits the fitness level of everybody in your group, not just your own. We recommend the Llanberis path if this is your first time climbing Snowdon. Reaching the summit is only half the battle so be vigilant as you descend the mountain, as you will become tired and are more likely to slip or trip at this point.

Cadair Idris is a popular hike so don’t expect to have the summit to yourself. Once you’ve taken in the views it’s time to continue the loop along the ridge towards Mynydd Gwerngraig. Description: Map sheet number OL2 in the OS Explorer map series is the ideal map to use when exploring the South and West areas of the Yorkshire Dales including Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. In 2022 a vote by the Snowdonia National Park Committee determined that Snowdon and Snowdonia should be called by their Welsh names in both Welsh and English context. This means that Snowdon will be known as Yr Wyddfa and Snowdonia as Eryri. Whilst this transition is being made, in this guide I will use both interchangeably.Descending down Tryfan’s south ridge into Bwlch Tryfan, you are now presented with the next scramble, Bristly Ridge. The more interesting route along Bristly Ridge is via Sinister Gulley.

Parking: Pay and Display but you must pre-book a parking space if you’re parking at Pen y Pass from 1 April until 30 October, 2023. If the car park is full and you are keen to walk from Pen-y-Pass you can use the Sherpa'r Wyddfa Park and Ride Service running from Nant Peris and Llanberis car parks.Description: Map sheet number OL7 in the OS Explorer map series, The English Lakes: South-eastern area is the ideal map to use when exploring the south-east area of the Lake District. With the impressive lakeside scenery around Windermere and the dramatic mountains that make up the region, this area is perfect for hiking holidays and days out. Description: Map sheet number OL17 in the OS Explorer map series is the ideal map for exploring the mountain scenery in Snowdon. This area, famous for its fantastic walking routes, is home to the highest mountain in Wales. Take one of the six well mapped routes to the summit of Mount Snowdon and enjoy the views! Skirt around the right side of Castell y Gwynt before clambering up a bouldery path to the summit. From here it’s just a short walk onto the summit of Glyder Fach, with the Cantilever Stone just beyond. In good weather the route from Glyder Fawr towards Glyder Fach is quite obvious, however in poor visibility map and compass work maybe required. The first severn Eryri (Snowdonia) treks all require a good level of map reading skills and in poor visibility may rely on compass use. If you’re looking for a mountain leader to guide you along your way then please get in touch with me here. As a certified mountain leader raised near the mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog, I’d be happy to teach you all about the mountains of my home country.

Pass by a disused quarry and two smaller lakes as you gradually climb towards Llyn y Foel. Beware the boggy ground along the way. It’s here the fun really starts with the 1km long, straight forward scramble up Ddaer Ddu towards the summit. The start of this route is around 1km beyond Nant Peris, near the Cwm Glas Bach Guesthouse. The path ascends in a northeasterly direction alongside the Afon Las. It climbs quite steeply until it levels off and reaches the saddle.

Ordnance Survey divides Great Britain into 100 km by 100 km squares, each with a two-letter code. The two-letter codes can be found printed in faint-blue capitals on Ordnance Survey maps and can also be found in the map key. The romer lines marked on the base plate of most compasses can help you to get a more accurate grid reference. You choose the scale of the map you’re using and then move the compass base plate over the map to show the tenths within a map square. This is more accurate than guessing the tenth gradations within a square Variations of grid referencesFor all the top things to do in Eryri, take a look at this guide. 1. The Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa Horseshoe There are fabulous 360 views from the summits of Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach, with the Snowdon massif to the southwest and the Carneddau and Anglesey to the north. The numbers going across the map from left to right are called eastings, and go up in value eastwards, and the numbers going up the map from bottom to top are called northings, because they go up in a northward direction. Description: Map sheet number 98 in the OS Landranger map series is the ideal map for planning your day trips and holidays to the Yorkshire Dales including Wensleydale and Upper Wharfedale.
