With amazing hand-drawn illustrations and interesting text, this resource is a great tool for getting children thinking about the world around them. The above video is from a third-party source. In the 1970s, there were fewer than 200 golden lion tamarins in the wild and, by 1996, they had made it to the IUCN red list. Due to conservation efforts, the number of golden lion tamarins has increased, but is still dangerously low. Nowadays, there are over 1000 golden lion tamarins in the wild. Sadly, due to deforestation, their remaining habitat is not big enough to sustain them if their population continues to grow.

Teacher talks about how various types of rhino species are endangered. (To learn more go to: https://www.rhinos-irf.org/rhinos/). Teacher talks about what endangered species means and how there are hundreds of endangered species in the United States as well. Although most of us won't be able to have a global impact, there are a number of things we can do to have a positive impact on wildlife in our area. For a long time, between the 17th and 20th centuries, whales were hunted heavily for oil. This hunting, which is known as whaling, almost made the blue whale completely extinct. Before this era of whaling, there were around 200,000 – 300,000 whales but after, there were just 5,000 – 12,000.

As things got out of hand, Warhol responded the way he knew best; by using art. The effects of Endangered Species cannot be underestimated even today when discussing environmental preservation issues. Since the series was created, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of environmental art. Artists such as Ai Weiwei 3 has been using art to advocate for animals rights. At the same time, Ansel Adams was pivotal in raising awareness for the conservation and preservation of wilderness. How about the status of the animals in 2019? Children could then investigate the causes of why the animals are endangered or follow their own line of inquiry to find out more about their chosen endangered animal - the posters would be a brilliant source of inspiration for classroom reports. As well as this, you could print out individual hand-out copies of the posters for your pupils to use for personal reference. This alien-like creature, which is also known as a Mexican salamander, is a type of amphibian. Axolotls look a lot like lizards and have smooth, moist skin and long tails. They also have external gills which grow out from both sides of their heads. Despite their appearance, chimpanzees are actually not monkeys. In fact, they are part of the ‘great ape’ family. Chimpanzees are actually our nearest living relatives and share around 98% of our genes.

Endangered Species is an outstanding work by Warhol. He used his Pop Art skills to his advantage and made it an avenue for activism. When the prints were exhibited, each had Warhol’s name in dominant red text, together with his image that “ gives the impression that his head has been carved from a lump of marble 8.” Warhol sent a grievous message about the endangered species. He summoned all of his skills and credentials to stop the war on wildlife animals. Of the ten animals in Endangered Species, eight remain endangered species, as two were removed in 1983 and 2007. Pine Barren’s tree frog was removed from the list of endangered species in 1983, shortly after the artist had created the series due to inaccurate data on the species.

The preliminary judges select the top forty semi-finalist artworks. From these forty semifinalists, the six final contest winners are chosen. Two separate judging panels, who are arts professionals, artists, and arts educators from across the U.S., select the semifinalists and finalists. The final six winning categories include: Grand Prize, First Place, and four Grade Level winners. The Grade Level winners include four groups: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. Blue whales can be found in all oceans of the world, but they tend to migrate to different areas depending on the time of year. For the majority of the year, they live in deep waters near the Arctic and Antarctic regions, as this area contains a large amount of krill. Then, during mating season, they travel closer to the Equator in search of a warmer climate, so they can give birth in warm waters. Similarly, bald eagle numbers in the US have climbed from about 500 in the 1960s to thousands today, thanks to habitat protection, captive breeding programs and the banning of a pesticide that damaged their eggs. Teacher discusses the word habitat with the class. Teacher explains how safeguarding a species’ habitat is vital to keeping that species from becoming endangered and/or extinct. If teacher has computer hooked up to LCD projector, class can look up certain endangered U.S. species here: http://endangered.org/endangered-species/ or they can look up the species that are endangered in their state here: https://www.fws.gov/endangered/

These non-native animals can introduce disease to other animals and disrupt the food chain. In Don’t Let Them Disappear, we learn about 12 different endangered species – giraffes, gorillas, blue whales, rhinos, pandas, whale sharks, polar bears, lions, sea otters, orangutans, tigers, and elephants. The book tells us a little bit about each animal including some fun facts and why they are endangered. Activism: Explores the Endangered Species Act of 1973, the inspiration for Warhol’s prints, and history of artist activism.
