Description

Leave-on moisturising ointments, creams, and lotions are most effective when applied immediately after bathing, as water that has entered the epidermis remains there, but they can also be applied at other times. As emollients are usually applied to the body with touch, this can cause problems. The result of not applying enough emollients can also alter sensation, with the feel of dry and scaly skin. Practically, to try and prevent itch and stop your son’s eczema from flaring, it is important to try and find an emollient he can tolerate. Emollients come in different formulations and have different textures, including greasy ointments, oily creams, lighter gels and even sprays. So, do try a variety – sprays can work well for people who don’t like being touched or dislike the texture of emollient on their skin. Apply the emollient by dabbing some on your skin, then gently rubbing it in. You don’t need to rub it in completely. You should always rub it downward in the direction of hair growth to avoid clogging your hair follicles. Don't Use With: Avoid pairing emollients with ingredients that can have potentially irritating side effects that you don't want sealed into the skin, cautions Nussbaum, who cites retinol and alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids as common examples. What Are Emollients?

Ask a doctor which one to use first.

Humectants are hydrophilic and absorb water. They can absorb this water from the air and moisturize the skin when the humidity is greater than 70%, but more commonly they draw water from the dermis into the epidermis, making skin dryer. [6] A study published in Skin Research and Technology in 2001 found no link between humectants and moisturizing effect. [7] When used in practical applications, they are almost always combined with occlusives. [8]

There is a risk of severe and fatal burns with all emollients – see the Drug Safety Update from December 2018.Be careful to make sure the skin cream does not get onto the fabric of armchairs or other furniture, cushions and blankets. Be aware that the cream can transfer from your skin onto the fabric of furniture when you are sitting or lying on it. Tell relatives and carers
