Description

The firm's engineering teams deserve an incredible amount of credit for making a small, high-speed drone that's very easy to unbox and fly. The Avata hovers in place when your hand is off the throttle, moves through the air effortlessly, and is extremely responsive to controls (enough so that 30mph flights through complex environments are possible). Racing pros can swap to a manual controller for 60mph flight too, though I wasn't brave enough to try this mode—I don't have the skills for flying quadcopters without autopilot assists. For comfort and safety, the standard Avata bundle includes propeller guards that make it a better choice around people and animals or when used indoors. It’s more fun and productive to fly when you feel safe, and the Avata’s Motion Controller makes this a good choice for a beginner. Its speed potential opens up plenty of room to learn and grow. The connection between the drone and the Goggles 2 is Ocusync O3+, the latest version of DJI’s transmission technology. Depending on what region you are flying, O3+ can provide a video and control link at up to 10km, or only 2km if you are based in Europe.

The DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 is required for operators who want to fly the Avata in M (Manual) mode for complete and limitless control. This mode is designed for experienced FPV pilots. Does not come with a charger. You can use your own USB-C charger. It is recommended to use the DJI 65W Portable Charger (sold separately), DJI 65W Car Charger (sold separately), or other USB PD chargers. While the Avata doesn’t stand a chance in a straight-ahead, full-throttle race, its smaller size and maneuverability might give the DJI FPV a challenge in an obstacle course. Here’s a short YouTube video from the channel Avata Time demonstrating how easy it is for you to maneuver the DJI Avata after only a few test flights. The video ends with a crash, but the Avata was unharmed, since the propeller guards and frame protect the more delicate parts. Side-by-side size comparison When using the standard DJI Motion Controller in one of the combos, you can perform motion control on the aircraft. That is, you can turn your wrist to control the direction of flight, and the aircraft will fly wherever you point to. You can also press the accelerator to control the speed of flying forward, or release the accelerator to let the aircraft hover in place. The control is intuitive and easy-to-learn.Unobstructed, free of interference, and when FCC-compliant. Maximum flight range specification is a proxy for radio link strength and resilience. Always follow local rules and regulations and fly your drone within your visual line of sight unless otherwise permitted. The bottom line when shopping for a drone or considering upgrading is to think about your own needs and preferences. If you want the best camera quality from a DJI drone that comes with a headset, the Avata has a clear advantage. If speed is more important, the DJI FPV is the fastest model.

So, how do these goggles compare, and are the DJI Goggles 2 enough of an upgrade to justify investing in the Pro-View Combo? Critically, the transmission bandwidth is still up to 50Mbps, so it’s a balance between resolution and framerate, with the new Goggles 2 going for resolution over frames-per-second. The through-the-camera view shows a sharp, smooth perspective, with low enough lag to make high-speed flight possible. DJI doesn't specify a latency in milliseconds, but the 1080p/100fps feed feels real-time to me. For the most part, the video feed is clear and sharp, but I did note some garbling and resolution loss when the transmission signal weakened. If you opt for the kit with the older FPV Goggles V2, you're limited to 810p resolution. The DJI FPV still records nice quality video in good conditions, so the difference might not be that noticeable. If you like recording early morning, sunset, or nighttime videos, the Avata will offer a higher fidelity result.
