We looked for mop handles made out of wood or bamboo, and mop heads made from organic cotton, recycled cotton, or even just plain cotton mops (when the alternative is something single-use). Recommending plastic mops seems counterintuitive to a post about eco friendly Swiffer alternatives. However, a high quality steam mop can last a decade or more, and it eliminates the need to buy floor cleaners that come in single-use bottles. Finally, once the mop cover has become too worn or dirty to use, cut up and compost everything but the velcro strips!It’s surprisingly easy to find (or make) floor cleaner and reusable mop pads. While I prefer reusable mop pads, you can just as easily wrap your Swiffer head in a towel or cloth to avoid buying new products. While Swiffer products captivated us with promises of speed mopping, they’re now viewed as the K-Cups of the cleaning world.

I am always looking for new ways to upcycle my old cloth. And one of the most useful cloths in my waste pile is old towelling. Every so often I have a clearout of my bathroom cabinet. There is always one towel that looks a bit threadbare and grey, and it goes in a (large) pile in the corner of my sewing room to be reused.
