Description

There are lots of creative things you can include in this topic to really bring the topic to life, and fire up children’s imaginations. This is a three week talk for writing unit plan based on the book ‘Vlad and The Great Fire of London’ by Kate and Sam Cunningham. If you are teaching the Great Fire of London this will give you the key information on the history, context and curriculum learning for this topic. P eople used water squirts to try and put the fire out, and fire hooks to pull down straw and wood from the burning buildings.

The aim is to share materials that encourage children to read and bring interactive experiences into the classroom. Reading Riddle provides ideas, resources, information and experiences related to reading and the Great Fire of London. There were no fire engines or fire extinguishers so people used leather buckets of water to try and put the fire out.Use our Great Fire of London Information PowerPoint to explain the sequence of events, then ask children to pretend to be just like Samuel Pepys, and create their own first-hand account with a couple of diary entries. It is 1666 and Vlad the flea and his friend Boxton the rat, love eating and biting their way around London. She was awarded a Military Medal after putting herself in danger during an attack on a medical centre on the Western Front. It was created so teachers could use the resources in class and this version would be easier to copy for your own use, in your class. If you’re lucky enough to still have provision areas in KS1, then you could use our Great Fire of London colouring sheets as a great introduction to the topic.

I recently published my first picture book (Vlad and the Great Fire of London) and I go into schools and libraries running activities around the Great Fire of London. Using drama techniques ask the children to move around the classroom as if it is the street and communicate with each other in role. With illustrations and vocabulary from the book Vlad and Tutankhamun’s Tomb this word mat is one of the resources created for the ancient Egypt topic. There are 6 target boards with varying levels of difficulty in the phrases so the game can be played by mixed ability groups. This is not a lesson resource book, but was written as a fun activity book, which could be used as homework - the contents are listed below and the attached video demonstrates some of the activities. Without Samuel Pepys, and his writings, we would have far less information about the fire, how it started, and how it was eventually stopped. Find out about the Great Fire of London through the story and illustrations, which are based on original sources and artefacts in this 2nd Edition of the bestselling book. The film then moves to Pudding Lane to show what it looks like now, the memorials and the spot where it all began. It’s really visual, and does not involve too much writing – great for those pupils who struggle with fine motor skills.

During the drama session, ask the children to go to sleep, they hear noises; screams andcrackling awake them. He kept a diary and wrote about the fire, this gives us a lot of first-hand information about what happened. They have been made with Key Stage 1 in mind and I have used these to make a class book for the book corner or library where children can share their ideas about books. The picture book Vlad and Tutankhamun’s Tomb is a many layered story that was written to engage, trigger ideas, discussion and help children visualise life for a ancient Egyptian worker. After the Great Fire, fire brigades were started with groups of people whose job it was to put out fires, since the response to the fire had been so totally inadequate and disorganised. It really does capture the imagination of children, and is a great introduction to History for children who may struggle with the notion of relating to things that happened in the distant past.
