Shortlisted for Saltire Society Publisher of the Year, 2016 National Galleries of Scotland Publishing is an established fine art and photography publisher. Smith's evocative storytelling and willingness to probe the murkier reaches of the human psyche make her a talent to watch! As Jean grows to trust Robert, she reveals what really happened on that bridge over the river Clyde. I found the rendering of the deaf experience - the history of sign language and the social attitudes of the time - particularly interesting.

Thank goodness there were enlightened people like Robert Kinniburgh who were determined that people who were deaf should be fully included in society.

As for the character we primarily follow through the narrative-Robert Kinniburgh-I struggled to get a firm grasp on his character, he was regularly outshone by the supporting cast of characters. I do think the last bit dragged a bit and the “climax” didn’t quite hit in the way it could’ve, hence the four stars. The plot may not be the strongest, but Hear No Evil is one to read for its brilliant historical world-building and captivating exploration of deaf experience.

Yet Smith gives Jean a voice and a sparkling personality - although perhaps 'gritty' would be a better description. From festivals to healthcare, and from galleries to schools, the internet is providing services, resources and networks to connect us to each other, from the safety of our self-isolation bubbles. In fact, as we are told Rottenrow could also be derived from the Gaelic phrase Rat-an-righ (road of the kings) perhaps some people in the congregation would have more readily understood a sign indicating a crown instead. Campbell’s court defence was made possible by a helper who found a way to interpret the hand signals she was making.
