Treat the crumpet-lover in your life to the real deal: find out how to make our homemade versions, with a crisp exterior and chewy centre. They’re the perfect surprise for a lazy breakfast in bed on Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, and they’re easy enough that you won’t have to get up too early to prepare them. In a small bowl, beat together the softened butter with the cinnamon and the brown sugar. Cut a square of brown parchment paper and spoon the cinnamon butter into the centre. Roll into a sausage shape and chill for at least 2 hours, or until hardened. Just wanted to share how much I enjoyed this recipe, along w/ a recommendation to make the dough the night before & just pop it in a lightly-oiled (w/ veggie oil or cooking spray) gallon ziploc bag to sit in the refrigerator overnight. Follow the recipe right up to the 1st rise part; using only All-Purpose flour (gluten and moisture content w/ bread or other flours will change both texture and amount of moisture needed) and being sure your milk is no hotter than 120F degrees or you’ll accidentally kill the yeast. Once the dough is combined and kneaded (I did mine in a stand mixer w/ a dough hook attachment), put it in the oiled bag and just let it rise in your fridge overnight – this will cut down significantly on your work in the morning. I love cinnamon so I also try and find a cinnamon flavour cereal. Kellogs have a cute dragon cinnamon cereal out this year. I have already stashed a box away for the North Pole Breakfast. Fruit Step 4 Repeat cooking with remaining batter, re-greasing the pan and rings as needed. Serve warm from the pan with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, if you like.

Asda’s Bakery Product Manager, Maddie Munden comments: “Following the success of our Christmas Tree toaster treats last year, we know that novelty crumpets are a firm favourite with our customers, and we’re confident the adorable new Reindeer Crumpets will lighten up breakfast tables up and down the country. We know families need some extra Christmas spirit this year, and what better way to get into the festive cheer than with delicious, Rudolph inspired treats at great value.” I swiftly wrote crumpets off as “tried them once and once was enough.” That is, until I ate some homemade crumpets at a friend’s house. My opinion of the famous crumpet made a 180 degree turn!

This is another very simple savoury idea that takes no time at all. Simply take as many slices as bread as you will need and Stamp a Christmas picture on each slice using a biscuit cutter. Press down just enough to leave a clear indent but don’t cut all the way through the bread. The bread can be covered and put on the table ready for toasting. When toasted the Christmas pictures will show up nicely. Brush the insides of the rings with a little melted butter. Put a flat griddle pan or large heavy-based frying pan over a medium heat and brush with melted butter. Arrange as many rings as will fit and, when the butter is sizzling, spoon 3 tbsp of the batter into each ring. Different recipes recommend different times. The batter is ready after sitting for 30 minutes (crumpets in above pics were made after 30 min) but I have found that letting it rest a bit longer will give you an even higher rise and a lighter texture. In the pic below I let the batter sit for an additional 20 minutes. See the side-by-side pic for a comparison of height. Heat a flat griddle pan or frying pan over a medium/low heat and place one or two crumpet rings (or however many will fit) into the pan. If you don't have crumpet rings, you can always use round cookie cutters or the outside of a small springform cake tin. Brush the inside of the moulds with a little butter, then spoon batter into the rings so it comes about halfway up. Don't be tempted to overfill the moulds, or it will be impossible to cook the crumpet all the way through.

Brand new to store shelves in time for Christmas 2020, Asda’s Reindeer Crumpets are sure to brighten up breakfasts this festive season. These are a must at our North Pole Breakfast. If you have read The Christmasaurus you will know they are a staple elf food at the North Pole. Cooking time will vary depending on your stovetop and frying pan but these will cook for approx 8-10 minutes (the time will vary according to the kind of cooktop and cookware you’re using. Just be sure to keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t burn on the bottom. Lower the temp as needed to finish off the cooking). Remove the crumpet rings using
a tea towel to protect your fingers, then flip the crumpets with a palette knife and cook for 2 minutes more. Set aside on a baking sheet. Re-grease the crumpet rings and repeat with remaining mixture. Iceland is yet to confirm the prices so keep your eyes peeled when you visit its stores later this year.
