If you’re planning on wearing them for extended periods of time, you may want to add some foam or padding around the edges where your legs will rest. This will help prevent bruising and discomfort. mm x 50 mm actually finishes at approximately 45 mm x 45 mm, and 50 mm x 100 mm actually finishes at approximately 45 mm x 90 mm. Next, you’ll need to drill holes into the top and bottom of the wood so that you can insert the metal rods that will serve as your stilts’ legs The Miao people have a reputation for living in mountainous areas and thus diaojiaolou make the perfect dwellings. Miao diaojiaolou spread up the sides of mountains and are built on very steep gradients. They are usually built by the villagers using local fir wood. The front of this type of diaojiaolou is held up by pillars but the rear of the house is suspended on wooden poles, making it level with the mountainside. This gives the Miao diaojiaolou their distinctive “hanging” appearance. The Miao villages of Basha, Xijiang and Langdeshang in Guizhou province have particularly stunning diaojiaolou. Xijiang is the largest Miao village in the world and has the widest showcase of Miao diaojiaolou.

Although the original legend behind the diaojiaolou may seem farfetched, it touches upon one of its main benefits. The key to its popularity is that, in ancient times, these stilted buildings would provide protection from wild animals, and nowadays they continue to provide protection from venomous snakes and insects that are still prolific throughout China. The cool breeze blowing through the windows of the upper levels acts like a kind of natural air conditioner, meaning these buildings also help prevent humidity-related diseases common in southern China. In the south of China, the level of humidity on the ground during summer is almost unbearable and potentially dangerous, so elevated living spaces are particularly important. These stilted houses are also designed to survive most natural disasters, such as floods and earthquakes. The standard (inch) measurements are best suited to North America and the metric (mm) measurements are best suited to Australasia.

The following 10 wooden stilt homes are examples of the creative potential that this unique typology can bring forth in contemporary architecture: There are 2 sizes : Youth- 18 inches tall & up to 120 lb– Adult– 24 inches tall & over 120 lb. (Foot to knee measurement is easily adjustable on both models.) These are suitable for beginners, casual stilt walkers and professionals. Make sure the holes are big enough for the rod to fit snugly but not so large that the rod can move around too much Make sure that the screws are long enough to go through both pieces of wood and come out the other side. You may want to pre-drill your holes to avoid splitting the wood. In contrast to the Miao people, the Tujia people prefer to live near mountains but close to or sometimes even over rivers or streams. Thus you’ll find that many Tujia diaojiaolou are either placed directly on the waterfront or hang over the water. The Tujia believe that these stilted houses embody the coexistence of God and man, so the designs of their diaojiaolou often reflect this. Tujia diaojiaolou are hard to come by, since the Tujia people are slowly abandoning their old settlements and assimilating into modern Chinese culture. The Tujia Folk Customs Park in Zhangjiajie, Hunan, is a large scale replica of a traditional Tujia village and features Tujia style Diaojiaolou. However, if you want a more authentic experience, we recommend visiting the Tujia village of Shuitianba in the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Hubei Province. The standard (inch) sizes are not an exact match to their equivalent metric (mm) sizes. So use one or the other. A bit about the wood size You will need to drill holes in each end of the leg pieces and insert dowels into these holes. The crosspieces will then be attached to the legs using screws or nails. If you can’t find a pre-cut piece of wood that meets these specifications, you may need to cut one yourself The treads are attached to the flat sides of the poles with large supports. To make the treads and supports strong enough, Tom recommends using a hardwood, such as poplar. He used carriage bolts to attach the supports to the poles; these can be unscrewed and moved to raise or lower the height of the treads. And last, a pair of rubber feet are popped onto the bottom of the poles to keep them from slipping while you walk. Shopping list

Next, use a drill to create two pilot holes in each piece of lumber, about 1 inch from each end. Once the pilot holes are drilled, insert 3/8-inch carriage bolts into each one and tighten with washers and nuts. Start by screwing the four ankle-height pieces of wood onto the two knee-high pieces of wood, using two screws per joint. Stilts are fun for kids and adults alike. They can be used for walking, running, or even dancing. But how do you make your own stilts? Next, cut your PVC pipe into four equal lengths. These will be the legs of your stilts. Then, assemble the elbows and T-joints as shown in the diagram below. Finally, add rubber or felt pads to the bottom of each foot support so your wood stilts won’t slip on hard floors.

Using a drill, tap 3 holes through the posts into the footrest. Make sure to do it high enough on the footrests to avoid going through the narrowest part. Stilts come in a variety of sizes, but the most common size is about 4 to 5 feet tall. The height of the stilt depends on the height of the person using them. taller people will need taller stilts, and shorter people will need shorter stilts. Our stilts have adjustable steps (footholds, footsteps). The lowest height of the footsteps in our plan is 35 cm, but as a child will develop skills and balance the steps can be raised 10 cm higher each time. Diameter of the legs is 42 mm, its lower part is square and the upper part – which is held in the hands – is cylindrical, to be comfortable for armpits and hands. Drill 1/2″ (12 mm) holes through the legs where marked. If you are not using a drill press, drill halfway through from each side to ensure the holes are in the middle on both sides.
