The French spirits company, La Martiniquaise, has released its Label 5, Sherry Cask Finish Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky, 70cl, 43% ABV, in select European markets. Not technically a Scotch whisky (since the final barrel aging and bottling takes place outside of Scotland), Nomad Outland is a blend of around 30 malt and grain whiskies from the Speyside region of Scotland (where Macallan, The Glenlivet, Aberlour and other classics are based). They age in ex-bourbon casks in northern Scotland between two and five years, then transfer to ex-Oloroso sherry casks for three more years. And then the blend travels to Jerez, Spain (sherry’s ancestral home) to rest another year in very freshly seasoned ex-Pedro Ximénez casks in the Nomad cellars of the González Byass wineries.Take a trip around the world through our whisky (or whiskey) collection – with more than 1,600 varieties, you’re spoiled for choice! Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. It’s not just the soaking wet freshness of the recently dumped sherry that adds magic to the juice — Spain’s increased heat and humidity means the whisky is spending more time getting absorbed into and influenced by the sherry-soaked oak than it does in chilly Scotland. Highly recommended. If you are a fan of Spanish brandy, like a sweeter Scotch, and appreciate the added complexity that a sherry finish provides, then you will find Nomad Outland Whisky an excellent addition to a “Scotch” whisky library even if it is not technically a Scotch. If your tastes run towards “peat monsters,” then it’s best to look elsewhere.

Deanston is a sometimes overlooked Highlands distillery that has an excellent range of single malts, including some organic expressions and this limited release 20YO. The whisky was matured in Oloroso sherry casks for two decades, and bottled at cask strength without color added or chill-filtration. There are notes of dried fruit and vanilla on the palate, followed by a hint of baking spice and prune. We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Low & No

The use of previously filled sherry butts in the aging of Scotch whisky has long been a ubiquitous feature of the Scotch industry. Historically, the practice was largely reserved for single malts. Macallan, GlenDronach and Balvenie were among the better-known distilleries that offered expressions that had been exclusively matured in one or more combinations of 500-liter sherry butts. Other distilleries offered expressions that had been “finished” from two months to two years in such sherry butts. Finish: The sweet fruit and honey notes refine as you swallow, providing a long, chewy vanilla/oak/raisin finish and just a faint hint of smoke. The overall mouth feel is a smooth, medium- to full-bodied whisky with both a surprising brightness and surprising sweetness. The bourbon cask influences are evident in the distinctive spice and vanilla flavors, but act as a nice compliment to the sherry finish notes. The two sherries offset each other nicely, adding nuts and dried fruit notes from the Oloroso and the sweet, golden raisin notes of the PX. That sweetness is nicely balanced and well integrated, and is free of the cloying, syrupy sweetness that can sometimes accompany PX finishes. The alcohol is smooth with a satisfying warmth, and is reminiscent of a fine Spanish brandy.
