Given that this column is principally about graphical symbols and how they’re used to convey safety messages, it’s time we focus attention on one of the more common forms of energy warned about on equipment: heat. Figure 2: The standardized ISO symbol for “Warning Hot Surface” and the IEC “Caution – hot surface” function and control symbol #5041, respectively. Safetyshop also carries more general types of caution signs that are likely to be required in every workplace, such as Caution Slippery Surface Signs, Caution Cleaning in Progress and Caution Trip Hazard Signs. The Regulations require, where necessary, the use of road traffic signs in workplaces to regulate road traffic. Fire Safety

Employers have a responsibility to provide employees with safe, clean working environments, and to use appropriate signage to warn employees of any potential health and safety hazards or concerns. Employers who fail to provide a safe workplace, or adequately warn of health risks, can be held liable for accidents that occur in the workplace. Alternative symbols exist and as the engineer responsible for your products’ safety labeling, you are able to choose which symbols you would prefer. You could choose to add a “do not touch” symbol to a label that already contains the ISO “hot surface” symbol, (see Figure 3) thereby communicating both the nature of the hazard and how to avoid it with two distinct pictorial representations. Another alternative is to use a symbol that combines both messages into a single graphic image. The example in Figure 4 is one that Clarion developed to convey the message, “hot surface – do not touch.” This symbol uses a hand in profile to display both human interaction with the hazard and add a measure of realism, dramatization, and understandability to the graphic. The use of the ISO red prohibition circle-with-slash surround shape communicates the “do not” portion of the message in the same way similar signs used for “no smoking,” “no left turn,” and “no pedestrian crossing” are meant to prohibit certain actions. Caution Hot Surface Signs are vital safety signs designed to warn individuals about the presence of hot surfaces and prevent potential burn injuries. These signs play a critical role in promoting awareness and ensuring the safety of personnel and visitors in various environments. The benefits of using Caution Hot Surface Signs are numerous as they effectively communicate the potential hazard and encourage precautionary measures. The use of Caution Hot Surface Signs provides legal protection for property owners or employers. By displaying these signs in areas with hot surfaces, they fulfil their duty of care obligations by warning individuals of potential hazards. In the event of an accident, the presence of these signs can serve as evidence that reasonable measures were taken to communicate the danger helping mitigate liability and potential legal consequences. You can also choose from a range of different kinds of finishes and treatments to ensure the longevity of your signage. These include: Should the worst happen, one of our fully compliant and comprehensive burns kits will help provide the injured party with the effective and immediate treatment required. These kits, which should be stored close to the areas containing temperature hazards, will be sufficient to treat burns or scalding and ease the pain for the sufferer. Dependent on the severity of the injury, a trip to hospital may also be necessary. rigid PVC with photo-luminescent pigmentation. After glow requirements exceed PSPA Class B Standard. Luminance properties and performance measured to DIN 67510. aluminium with gloss white powder coating. Suitable for both internal and external applications. Excellent weathering and UV resistance provides a long-life product.

OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration committee) have put into place several guidelines to identify these hazards and safeguard staff. Business owners are urged to adhere to these guidelines.

When selecting the finishings or treatments that will work best in your workplace, consider the specific needs of the environment. For example: do the signs need to be seen at night? Do they need to be graffiti-resistant or anti-slip for high traffic workplaces? Caution Sign Installation Caution Hot Surface Hazard Warning Signs are designed for workplaces where hot surfaces are present. These signs serve as a visual reminder clearly indicating the presence of hot surfaces and the need for caution to prevent burns or injuries.

They apply to all workplaces and to all activities where people are employed, but exclude signs used in connection with transport or the supply and marketing of dangerous substances, products and equipment. Hot surfaces are not always readily discernible. So if you know that a surface could become dangerously hot, then it is likely that you have a duty to warn people of the possibility of a burn hazard. Once again, graphical symbols can come to the rescue and save the day by assisting you with carrying out this responsibility. An anodized safety sign or label’s image is actually dyed into the surface of a specialized aluminum material and then put through a chemical process to seal the image into the pores of the aluminum. Although the colors are not as vibrant as an ink-printed label, the color will be protected from heat degradation. As for mounting the anodized sign or label, specialized adhesives can be used that withstand higher temperatures. Our wide selection of temperature warning signs is designed to alert and inform people of the presence of hazards in the area around them. Sold in a variety of sizes, materials and orientations, displaying such signage in and around your premises ensures that you comply with current health and safety regulations – as well as helping to reduce the chance of any of your employees or visitors having a temperature-related accident.

One of the significant advantages of Caution Hot Surface Hazard Warning Signs is their versatility and ease of installation. These signs can be easily mounted on walls, doors or other appropriate surfaces in visible locations near the hot surface areas. By using these signs consistently and visibly you establish a standardised system that promotes safety and helps prevent accidents related to hot surfaces. Safety signage is an easy and efficient way of informing staff, visitors or customers of all potential risks. Amongst them but not restricted to: Figure 1: Typical word message-only sign failing to fully indicate the nature of the hazard, the consequences of interaction, and how to avoid the hazard.
