As Sam grows, the tooth fairy continues to show up unexpectedly and begins to change its form, becoming a chilling sexual thing that teases and taunts and awakens odd feelings in Sam. In France in 1887, there is a written account of the Virgin Mary collecting children’s teeth and giving toys in exchange. By 1902, it was then a ‘good fairy’ who took the teeth. The adults in the story are rarely the understanding and supporting parents we have become used to from american television series. They are fallible, as clueless as the children most of the time, and hardly the role models the boys are looking for. They rise to the occssion though when things get really tough. Here he writes about the evolution of a group of young boys, through to their departure for university. He manages to get right inside their (rather strange) world. The protagonist is (literally?) a character in the Tooth Fairy's nightmare.Even though I was a little disappointed because I was shooting for pure horror for my October reading spree, I was still caught up in the story and was entertained to the end.
