Description

The book includes 5,000 locations - everywhere from Bedrock to Erinsborough, Vice City to Wakanda - drawn from varied works of fiction, but plotted alongside one another like some madcap alternative reality. Matt Brown is author of several books for Batsford, using his trademark humour and playfulness as tools to explore the world. Illuminating essays accompanying the maps give a great insight into the stories behind the imaginary places, from Harry Potter's wizardry to Stone Age Bedrock in the Flintstones. The authors spent months compiling hundreds of fictional and imaginary places from film, television, literature, myths, comics, video games and much more, all of which were carefully plotted in a series of highly detailed, antique-style maps by Mike. Clockwise from top left: Gulliver and a giant bee in Brobdingnag and with a Houyhnhnm (talking horse) from Gulliver's Travels; the Grand Budapest Hotel from the movie of the same name; Godzilla or Gojira; yellow periscopes that represent The Yellow Submarine; floating plastic waste that references the island in Plastic Beach, the album by Gorillaz; the whale attacking the crew of the Pequod in Moby-Dick; and the main characters from the classical Chinese tale Journey to the West.

For example, in Wales, we find Cackle’s Academy, a mountaintop school featured in Jill Murphy ’s The Worst Witch series and disguised to non-magic folk as the ruined Castle Overblow, whilst a few mountaintops away is a rival school of magic operated by Miss Pentangle, and this is only a short flight on a broomstick from Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children on Cairnholme Island. Davies, compiles thousands of fictional and imaginary locations set in the real world from film, television, literature, myths, comics, computer games and many other historical and modern sources.I was commissioned to create a series of eighteen detailed maps in an antique style to plot the locations of all these fictional places, each focussing on a different part of the world in the manner of an atlas. Or maybe you want to add some adventure to your lockdown life and finally visit Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island?

Find out how to get to Sesame Street, where to join Starfleet and thousands of other places besides, in this indispensable guidebook to all those places you always wanted to visit – if only they were real. Locations from film, TV, books, computer games and comics are ingeniously plotted on a series of beautiful vintage-looking maps. I also developed a range of icons and symbols for features such as mountains, lakes, shipwrecks and even 'sky elevators'.These were then developed by me into more detailed, stylised maps, which were then sent back to Matt who placed all of the text labels and pins.

You'll also find the routes of fictional car chases, speedboat pursuits in Venice, the pilgrimage path of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, and much more.

The full design for the map of the United States, which is divided into three sections (east, central and west) for the book. Fascinating and beautiful, this is an essential book for any popular culture fan and map enthusiast. London remains at the heart of the project, with hundreds of fictional places spread over four pages.
