While some reviewers loved the sound quality, convenience, and functionality-and found no issues with Bluetooth connectivity-others have disagreed. As a consumer or gear tester, you can really only assess the value of MIPS by slamming your head into something solid while wearing a multi-impact enabled helmet and then doing it again in a regular helmet. That sounds a bit extreme. But scientists have conducted numerous tests on MIPS helmets, dropping them from 2.2-3.1 meters on 45-edges angles onto grinding paper. Ouch. Meanwhile, you’ll know that the classic ABS hardshell and an EPS foam liner, when paired with MIPS, will protect their brain just as well as many other helmet models out there.Multi-impact: This was an absolute must. Each model includes MIPS (or an equivalent tech such as POC’s SPIN). You can read more about MIPS in our section dedicated to explaining how the tech works. Just know that MIPS offers a wider variety of protection from impacts and multiple angles. This may be part of the reason some testers prefer similarly-priced options (although non-MIPS) from Smith, which is known to fit other shaped heads better. The most significant is the padding design, which doesn’t protect you as well from the Boa fit system as we’d like. Cinching the helmet creates light pressure points at the sides of the head (the shape could’ve also been part of the issue, and the Merak seems to favor more of an oval-like head rather than round). Additionally, the minimalist padding meant the helmet ran on the cold side on frigid resort days, and the foam used around the ears muffles more sound than we prefer. Some will find these tradeoffs worth it for the advanced safety tech, but we’d like to see some of the finer details sorted out before moving it up our ranking.
