Lila was such a great main character and her growth was absolutely stunning. She’s fierce and determined, she loves her baking and her family more than anything else… yet. She thinks she knows what she loves and what she wants, yet as the story goes along, she discovers new pieces of herself, shapes new dreams for herself that she didn’t see coming, at all. I just loved her so much and found myself relating to her and her struggles every now and then, which made this read even more of a hit, for me.

Like so many children of immigrants, there is a sense that first-generation children should have careers thought out, and Lila is realizing that she has power over her life’s direction. VERDICT: Readers who have often wondered about stepping outside their comfort zone can find courage in Lila’s story.”now the romance felt really weird to me. like they were good friends and then randomly decided that they could hold hands? I never honestly even knew the status of their relationship because they never confessed feelings or anything, they just hugged one time. And they didn't even kiss until the very end which was also really confusing (not that the romantic relationships have to be about just kissing; it just felt odd)

Speaking of hungry, Namey lists “my mom’s arroz con pollo” as one of her favorite dishes, sharing that “it is the perfect comfort food. I ate it so often growing up. With one bite, memories flood of my childhood, and cooking with my mami and beloved tías. This was the first dish I knew I had to include in my book.” The discussions on grief and mental health. I touched on this a little before but the exploration of Lila's dip in mental health due to the grief was beautifully explored. I thought the way Laura Taylor Namey showed the different ways in which you can grieve was superb (e.g. the death of a loved one, a relationship, a change in friendship dynamics, a lifestyle, dreams and how, despite not physically losing them, losing a person to dementia can often cause extreme grief.) It's not often you can read a book in which grief is such an overarching theme and still come away feeling uplifted and hopeful, but that's exactly what this book did. Horrible. Espantoso. Horripilante. Enfadoso. Me faltan sinónimos para describir lo mala que fue la narración. Well that ended up being quite a lovely book about family, friendship and having the courage to choose your own destiny.

Table of Contents

This book feels like a warm hug, a hot cup of cocoa that doesn't scald but warms your hands, and the softest pillow. I adored how gentle and sweet this story was; it felt like a balm to the soul. As a cook I felt directly offended and pissed by how the author portraits not only people from my profession, but also the environment and everything that surrounds the work life in a kitchen. We do not know the exact roles that the lead cast will be playing yet, but we can probably assume that Kit is going to play Lila’s love interest, Orion. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin star Maia Reficco has been cast, likely as Lila andKate del Castillo of La Reina del Sur fame has also been tapped to star in the movie. To All The Boys’ Producer Ace Entertainment Adapting Latinx YA Novel ‘A Cuban Girl’s Guide To Tea And Tomorrow’; Maia Reficco, Kit Connor & Kate Del Castillo To Lead Film’s Cast
