This is reminiscent of the 'I've never seen an elephant fly' song which the crows sing in Walt Disney's 1941 movie Dumbo. His first novel, a humorous fantasy entitled The Carpet People, appeared in 1971 from the publisher Colin Smythe. Some readers felt that this was a reference to Larry Niven's Ringworld series, where the main character, Louis Wu, always uses the phrase "There ain't no justice" (abbreviated as "TANJ") while others thought this far-fetched for such a common expression. Terry worked for many years as a journalist and press officer, writing in his spare time and publishing a number of novels, including his first Discworld novel, The Color of Magic, in 1983.

It doesn't help that dwarves (and therefore Carrot) are very literal creatures that don't know sarcasm or puns or figures of speech. It’s a redemption story, which manages to parody your regular fantasy tropes like dragons and palace guards, but also the good old fashioned police story. If you read these first, you will be rightly annoyed by their just-barely-okayness, and spend the rest of your life muttering about how overrated he is. Only problem is, the Ankh-Morpork City Watch are more used to dealing with mobs than dragons, and if they can’t bring down this fire-breathing tyrant, Ankh-Morpork will burn. Vimes is introduced here, with even some foreshadowing about the kind of hero he will be throughout the series, but also so is Lady Sybil Ramkin.Especially since he is a good fighter, honourable and knows all the (forgotten) rules and laws - and will enforce them. Ankh-Morpork changes from just a generic city in a medieval fantasy story on The Colour of Magic into a much much more living city on this novel.

There are times when cutting away to the result of the matter is hilarious but sometimes I would like to be indulged. Many British soldiers were stationed in Alexandria, Egypt, in North Africa, and this word was brought into the language by them.

an audio play presented live at Dragon*Con in 2001, adapted by David Benedict and performed by the ARTC (Atlanta Radio Theatre Company). My view after reading one book, they are clearly in the same class, and while I still like Adams better that might be because I’m a bigger Science Fiction fan than Fantasy. Getting back into Discworld made me wonder how much of my love for it is how it influenced who am I now (I started reading these at 14), or is it speaking to my core as a person. Like I said, skip them until you've read some of the really good ones, and then brace yourself and read them purely for continuity purposes.Stay away, don´t investigate, please, we´ll do traditional, good old fashioned lynch justice with far fewer victims and collateral damages. Regarded as one of the most significant contemporary English-language satirists, Pratchett has won numerous literary awards, was named an Officer of the British Empire “for services to literature” in 1998, and has received four honorary doctorates from the Universities of Warwick, Portsmouth, Bath, and Bristol.
