Description

A sudden loss of older flowers with a yellowed stalk is a sign of prolonged droughts. Especially during the flowering process, near-continuous moist bark is mandatory for extended blooms; allow the roots to turn a green-greyish colour in between irrigations. Caring for a Dendrobium that is mounted in a tree cork is quite costly as higher humidity levels are needed which means you will have to water the plant on daily basis as well as spritzing it. Bear in mind that water or moisture-holding soils cause rotting roots and stems, consequently leading to loss of the Dendrobium’s vibrancy and possibly death of the entire plant. Move your orchid to an area with good natural light, or if this is not possible, use grow lights to give your orchid 15 hours of light a day. Overall, while there are various options available on the market regarding chemical pest control methods for Orchids; at times they need some extra attention and care from gardeners like us! 5. The importance of treating both the plant and surrounding environment for a complete eradication of pests

Consider purchasing a moisture meter to help you determine how wet or dry your orchid’s soil is. You can also use your finger to determine if your orchid needs to be watered. To do this, push it about one inch into the orchid’s potting mixture. If it feels dry, water it. If it’s still wet, then wait longer for it to dry out. Dendrobium orchids grow best in small pots, and therefore work well as patio, greenhouse or indoor plants.

These orchids must have good drainage – it can be helpful to plant them in hanging baskets to ensure this. Planting Dendrobium orchids make spectacular houseplants, with their gorgeous blooms lasting for weeks in spring, and with a bit of care, they’ll thrive and flower year after year. Here’s how to keep your dendrobium looking good all year round. You can increase the humidity around your plant by using a humidifier – its ideal humidity level is 50–70%.

Most of these orchids are pseudobulbous plants with pendent inflorescences. They include species such as Den. aggregatum or lindleyi, Den. chrysotoxum, Den. densiflorum, Den. farmeri and Den. thyrsiflorum. If you live somewhere where the air is dry, consider getting a humidifier for your orchid plant’s room. You can also place a small tray with pebbles beneath your orchid with water in it to increase humidity. Be sure, if you do this, that the pot is not sitting directly in the water. If your orchid is sitting in water, it will cause the orchid’s roots to rot. Situate in a bright, indirect location that's away from the sun or an operating radiator. Be sure to allow its compost to see the natural light, too, as soil mould is a key issue with too shady areas. They like their roots to be crowded, so you should select a pot that is no more than 3cm bigger than the plant’s root ball. Dendrobium orchids must be by bright light indoors. They require a lot of light but not direct sunlight. Choose, if possible, a south-facing window, perhaps slightly shaded. This light will emulate the bright, partial sun that the dendrobium orchid receives in nature.

It does not harm the orchid if you want to cut the sprays for a flower arrangement. When the plant is finished blooming, prune the sprays at their base (where they connect to the cane). If you do not do this, your plan may not bloom again. If you have pruned your sprays and your orchid continues not to bloom, this could be for several reasons.

Dendrobium nobile orchids need cool conditions to grow well. A daytime temperature between 16-21°C (61-70°F) in summer is ideal, with a 5°C (10°F) difference between day and night temperatures. In summer, they do best in partial shade. If all else fails, don’t be afraid to call in professional help. Sometimes even the most experienced gardeners need assistance when it comes to solving tough problems in their gardens.Once you have identified the specific pest issue, then appropriate action can be taken for controlling them effectively without harming your plant’s health and growth.

The Dendrobium genus includes over 900 different species of orchids, in a dizzying array of shapes, colours and sizes. However, most commercially available dendrobium orchids have been bred from just two species, Dendrobium nobile and Dendrobium phalaenopsis. These two species come from very different climates – Dendrobium nobile is native to cool parts of China, India and the Himalayas. In contrast, Dendrobium phalaenopsis comes from warmer areas in south-east Asia and Australia. (Don’t be misled by the name – these are not the same as Phalaenopsis orchids, which are a separate genus all of their own.) It lays eggs on flower spikes and new growth. Its larvae, which come in the form of white or yellowish caterpillars, also invade new growth and flowers, causing them to rot and collapse. This light can come from natural sunlight through a south-facing window, or specially set up grow lamps.

5. The importance of treating both the plant and surrounding environment for a complete eradication of pests

Dendrobium orchids do not need to be pruned, and older canes often store water and nutrients essential for plant health. Unfortunately, severe rotting of the roots and stems cannot be reversed . You must discard the entire plant and desist from reusing once infected mediums under such circumstances. – Yellowing Group 2: Includes species such as Den. anosmum (superbum), Den. crassinode, Den. falconeri, Den. fimbriatum, Den. findlayanum, Den. heterocarpum (aureum), Den. loddigesii, Den. moniliforme, Den. parishii, Den. primulinus and Den. transparens.
