If you’re not interested in giving SanDisk/Western Digital your money, there are obviously a ton of other options that will serve just fine. The Best Options Aside from differing in size (type A CFexpress cards are physically smaller than type B), the main difference between the two types is the number of PCIe lanes available in each. Type A CFexpress cards offer one lane whereas type B offers two. This translates to different data transfer speeds; type A caps out at 1000MB/s, and type B has a maximum speed of 2,000MB/s (though it's unlikely you'll reach these top speeds in practice). Can a CFexpress reader read XQD cards? Although the Sony A7S III has two SD-type card slots which are compatible with UHS-II media, the slots can also accept CFexpress Type A cards. These are smaller than the Type B cards we’ve seen in use to date, and they’re not quite as fast, but they’re fine for the A7S III’s 4K video-shooting capabilities. Just how influential Sony and Nikon will be in promoting and influencing adoption of XQD remains to be seen. There is, however, a whole lot of industry clout behind those two brands. Will Nikon and Sony Lead the XQD Charge?

The Best CFexpress Memory Cards in 2023 | PetaPixel

As such, a greater number of manufacturers have released type B cards. Among them, Delkin's 512GB model from their Power line of cards is a very strong performer.

Phlearn Pro

The Canon EOS R5 boasts dual memory card slots, one which for CFexpress cards and the other compatible with SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-II media. This software is only verified to operate with Sony memory media currently on the market. Because operation has not been verified for memory media from other manufacturers, be aware that operation may not be supported for such memory media. Other than read and write speeds, CFexpress also has one certification worth noting right now: VPG. VPG stands for Video Performance Guarantee and was first created in 2011 by the Compact Flash Association (CFA) with Profile 1. Profile 1 guaranteed sustained write performance of up to 20 MB/s but as video quality has increased, demands have grown. As a result, the CFA has published additional profiles for VPG, the most recent being VPG 400. CFexpress cards are the latest generation of what was once CompactFlash (CF card). These are high speed memory cards designed to keep up with the demands of the latest cameras in terms of both high-resolution photos and video.

How-To Geek The Best CFexpress Cards of 2023 - How-To Geek

Of note, PetaPixel did notice that a few cards took longer to recover than others. Namely, the ProGrade Digital Gold, Acer, Pro Master Pro Velocity Cine, and Pergear Ultra were slightly slower to fully clear the buffer than the other cards, meaning that a photographer in the field won’t be ready to fire another full burst quite as soon as they would be if they used any other tested card. Weight: 675 g / 1 lb. 7.9 oz with battery and memory card but without body cap, 585g/1 lb. 4.7 oz. body only The introduction of an SD card slot is good news from anyone upgrading from a Nikon DSLR that accepts the same media. It should be noted that XQD cards came into the market at higher price points than comparable CF and SD cards. It should also be noted that SD and CF cards are not actually what many would label as truly comparable to XQD. The price difference is reasonable when considering the increases in all aspects that XQD brings to digital photography. CFexpress cards may even be more costly.Maximum continuous shooting rate: 10fps for up to 200Jpegs or 77 12-bit uncompressed raw files, 9fps with 14-bit raw files The rear screen, however, works brilliantly. The vari-angle pivot is very welcome, but you can still tilt the screen if you want to and have it stay on the lens’s optical axis. The EVF, which has the highest resolution currently available, is excellent.

What Is a CFexpress Card? - How-To Geek

Obviously, when it comes to pure speed, the CFexpress 4.0 cards are runaway winners. That only matters if you care about workflow speeds (your camera doesn’t know the difference), but if that’s important to you, it’s hard to argue with how much better the new specification is. MicroSD is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: tinier versions of SD cards. These cards are most commonly used in smartphones, action cameras, some smaller cameras like the Sony RX0 II, and some drones like the DJI Mavic 3 and DJI Mini 2. Maximum read and write speeds can give us a reasonable picture of one card’s speed compared to another, but sometimes the important specification is the minimum sustained write speed. This is particularly important when recording video or shooting long bursts of high-megapixel photos at a high burst rate. Sony's video continues to impress in its overall quality, with the processed video straight out of the camera being sharp with good color balance and fantastic dynamic range. Although the footage still requires a little tweaking to get it perfect for social media or any other direct use as it is a little drab in color. Serious videographers do have the choice of more codecs for precise editing. CFexpress cards use an interface called PCIe 3.0, as well as NVMe 1.3 protocols. You don’t really need to know the ins and outs of how this stuff works – the bottom line is that this is the kind of tech you would previously have found in computers and solid-state drives (SSDs), which are typically much faster than SD cards.

Don’t worry about CFexpress Type C quite yet. No camera uses it and no manufacturer is producing on the standard yet. VPG 400 If a card’s maximum read and write speed is the same, this will be indicated by R/W before or after the speed in MB/s.
