A Global Pandemic has thrown a lot of (really annoying) obstacles our way, but this is the start of the upcoming launch of Tasty Mates; The New Gummy Sweet Bursting with Flavour and Personality. While we avidly munch on our Juicy Peach Tasty Mates (Oh so juicy!), our eye is caught by a detail: the candy we’re eating is vegan! But why vegan candy?, we ask Joe. After investing as much money as they could, Woolf and Sunshine realised they would need more resources, so did a Dragon’s Den style pitch to their parents whose investment enabled them to send samples to potential investors.

For example, next month we’ll launch in a major department across America, Canada and Australia, an airline, and more.’ The actual process requires several stages — and some patience. After boiling up the water and adding sugar, glucose syrup and pectin (used instead of gelatine) the flavour, colour and citric acid is added. This is poured into moulds, left to cool then the little sugary people are popped out, drenched in snow sugar (a non--melting icing sugar) to form their shell, then left to chill in in a temperature-controlled environment for ten days which gives them the right texture and finish. The pair spent evenings and weekends writing business plans, surrounded by vats of boiling sugar. “We were working on the marketing while practising making sweets in our kitchens for the best part of a year. It’s not easy — the sugar fizzes up at the end. I have scars all over my arms” admits Woolf. One of my friends was winding me up and I dubbed her “The Salty One”, so other friends started asking, “Which flavour am I?”. It all started from there. Each of our flavours portrays a personality trait in a friendship group. Eventually we’d like to come up with hundreds of personality traits and associated flavours.’It’s taken 2 years; growing self-awareness; a bag full of wins and a larger bag of losses, and Tasty Mates is almost here. You may have forgotten to socialise throughout all this, but Tasty Mates are friends for life. So why vegan? “First and foremost, I wanted my mates who don’t eat gelatine to be able to eat what I made. And you don’t need to eat beef gelatine when eating sweets.” It is impossible to cross Home Grown without making connections, and we ask Joe if he has made many. The start-up nature of Tasty Mates means the team are constantly thinking of new ideas to keep a competitive edge. We saw this when we took part in their business meetings, helping them to develop new initiative projects and strategic planning. Don’t spend a penny until you have written your mission down. A business plan is an evolving document. Change it, add new things, and scribble out others. Your business is more than the idea, it’s the people actioning it. Understand each other. Understand the steps. Then get to work.
