The incredibly influential fantasy novel comes to comics in this first installment of best-selling author Robin Hobbs’ Assassin's Apprentice! This adaptation is a wholly different production and not to be confused with the earlier French graphic novel adaptation of the Farseer trilogy called L'Assassin Royal. Assassin’s Apprentice #1 has the difficult task of adapting a novel to comic book form but does so with great skill and interpretation thus far.”— Major Spoilers

In addition to writing, her interests include gardening, mushrooming, and beachcombing. She and her husband Fred have three grown children and one teenager, and three grand-children.

Written by Robin Hobb and Jody Houser this adaptation does a very good job of introducing the character of Fitz as a young boy, the world of the Six Duchies and some of the main characters and plotlines. The incredibly influential fantasy novel comes to comics in this first installment of best-selling author Robin Hobbs’ Assassin’s Apprentice ! It's impossible to fit all the detail from the book into an adaptation but all the main plot points and events are here which means we get a much faster moving adventure and yet somehow is still feels like a story being told at a leisurely pace. The project was announced on the 9th of September 2022. It is currently in production and being released in set of issues. I read the novelisations a long time ago. Half a lifetime in fact. The mere sight of this in comic form was enough to bring so many memories of my younger self and the happiness and simplicity of such times. The novels were really good, although I enjoyed the Liveship Trilogy more (the second series from Robin Hobb). In fact, it remains my favourite fantasy series to this day. Still, the chance to revisit such a pivotal and poignant moment in my reading life was simply too irresistible to pass up, and I'm really glad I didn't either.

Either way, Dark Horse and this creative team have created something pretty darn special here. Should the quality continue throughout its entire run (hoping its completed, of course), this will no doubt draw a lot of new readers into the tales of the Six Duchies. Maybe after we can even geta Liveship Traders adaptation. Please... 4.5/5

Robin Hobb is the author of three well-received fantasy trilogies: The Farseer Trilogy (Assassin’s Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin’s Quest), The Liveship Traders Trilogy (Ship of Magic, Mad Ship and Ship of Destiny) and the Tawny Man Trilogy (Fool’s Errand, Golden Fool, and Fool’s Fate) Her current work in progress is entitled Shaman’s Crossing. Robin Hobb lives and works in Tacoma, Washington, and has been a professional writer for over 30 years. The Assassin's Apprentice comic is an adaptation of the first volume of the Farseer trilogy published by Dark Horse Comics. I would highly recommend Assassin’s Apprentice and the Farseer Trilogy. As you read you become ever more immersed in the story and it just seems to get better and better.”— Fantasy Book Review Until recently, Fitz was only known as “boy.” The illegitimate son of a powerful noble, Fitz is taken in by his uncle, Prince Verity, who prepares the boy for a journey to the capital to meet his royal grandfather. But Fitz is not a normal child. An ancient power stirs inside him, something that will change the destiny of the Six Duchies forever!

Having recently started my reading journey following the life of FitzChivalry Farseer with the novel of Assassin's Apprentice I was eager to see how it would be adapted into comic book format. AIPT can exclusively reveal a new comic series is on the way this December from Dark Horse Comics called Assassin’s Apprentice. An adaptation of Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy, Hobb will be joined by co-writer Jody Houser, artist Ryan Kelly, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. The six-issue series launches into comic shops on December 14, 2022. Young Fitz lives in King Shrewd’s castle. He works for Burrich, the stablemaster. Fitz wears the royal seal, but the bastard wields no power. Old Chade offers to teach Fitz his trade. One proviso: Fitz must keep their lessons secret. Fitz has learned to keep his thoughts and feelings to himself. Chade expects the boy to question and make his own choices in life. But Fitz doesn’t like the idea of killing people, and his growing penchant for questioning authority could get him into trouble.

The cover art is not the style in the comics. The story is illustrated by Ryan Kelly with colours by Jordie Bellaire. The art suits the fantasy setting and all the characters are easily distinguishable from one another. The colour palette is sombre showing the medieval setting with flashes of colour cleverly used to portray uses of the magical abilities of The Skill and The Wit. Assassin’s Apprentice accomplished an impressive amount…and I’m genuinely excited to see where Fitz’s epic adventure goes next.”— Comicbook.com Art is good (even excellent in places) but knows it's there to support the story rather than carry it. The series is written by Jody Houser with interior art by Ryan Kelly, colors by Jordie Bellaire, and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, with cover art provided by Anna Steinbauer. I have really enjoyed working with Dark Horse to bring Fitz’s story to this medium,” says author Robin Hobb. “I’ve been very impressed with their integrity and respect for the original material.”
