The Olympus LS-P1 can be easily mounted on a camera for high quality audio (Image credit: Future) Specifications Out of many use cases, a particular up and coming one is of course filmmaking: in combination with the latest Olympus camera models such as the 4K-video-boasting OM-D E-M1 Mark II and OM-D E-M10 Mark III or the all-new Olympus PEN E-PL9, the LS-P4 is the perfect device to produce professional travel, documentary, event, wedding or music videos with Hi-Res sound or to create excellent audio for YouTube videos. Hi-Res audio capturing through latest technology The LS-P4 will last for up to 39 hours per charge, and with the clever incorporation of a USB adapter right into the base of the unit, you can charge it and transfer its contents without any cables. It’s also furnished with a generous 8GB of internal memory, although you can expand this to 32GB through the microSDHC port should you need to.

There’s a good choice of formats, too. The FLAC format offers better than CD quality as half the storage size and you can go down to MP3 if you are worried about eating into the supplied 8GB. It’s easy too Many parabola mics use lavs or other small omnis in them. They can distort sound a fair bit, and change the frequencies, depending on the geometry and size. But they can have pretty high gain too. As producers, you struggle to get inspired if you're using the same thing. A lot of times, a piece of analogue gear can break you out of that rut" – Shaun Lopez on crafting synth sounds for the long-awaited second album from Crosses Whilst the ME66 has a stronger output signal than many of the competitors, the shotgun mics are not designed to amplify the sound so much as cut out extraneous sound from either side, the fact that the ME66 does to some extent is a definite and worthwhile bonus. For strong directional recording you have to move into the realms of parabolic reflectors, which are not portable or cheap. I used it with the parabola for a few days in the garden and it worked very well, although I think the affair is too cumbersome for me to take in the field with my camera. We tested the LS-P1 with a mixture of speech and music sound sources, and found that selecting a Manual recording level and using the Limiter gave the best results. Automatic recording resulted in some clipping and distortion when recording music. It is the ideal companion for filmmakers, Youtubers and musicians looking to easily produce professional sound. Capture, clear, dynamic and professional-quality audio for video, music, interviews, documentaries, travel and events thanks to the TRESMIC 3 microphone system which captures the full 20Hz - 44kHz frequency spectrum. I can report that the Rode mic (mono) actually provides a signal to both channels on the Olympus LS-P4. There is no need for an adapter, nor to duplicate channels in Audacity.

Some XLR to TRS cables preserve the balanced signal to the TRS plug. These are usually 1/4" plugs (like the old large headphone plug) and were used in broadcast. Consumer 3.5mm stuff is not this. Normally with such devices I use one of several local venues to capture a gig or three be it trio, quartet or larger group, sadly this was not possible at the moment and even when we return to ‘normality’ there is still ‘social distancing’ to overcome. However it did mean that talking with my neighbours in normal voice was caught effectively even at two metres or more. The Zoom mode can work over even longer distances. The 3 microphone system comprises of 2 premium-quality directional microphones that ensure a rich stereophonic sound capture, and an omni-directional mic at the center which captures all your low frequencies for a fully balanced recording. The LS-P4 can handle up to 120dB of SPL without clipping. For voice recording, the LS-P4 features the latest in microphone noise cancellation, giving you clearer results in noisy environments. Portable design with built-in battery But if you can’t remember where you left an important recording, then the Calendar Search function – the second choice on the Home screen, accessed via the F1 button – means you won’t be without it for long, as recordings are displayed according to the time created. The elephant in the room is Apple's lightning connector. European regulators are putting pressure on Apple to ditch its Lightning connector in favour of a universal standard such as USB-C. If they are successful, then the MV88 may be forced into early obsolescence. Remote control is dramatically improved. The P4 was released along with an Android app that enabled the user to perform basic remote control functions. The P5 will have both Android and iOS apps, both of which will give you in-depth control of the device. Thank you. I'll definitely consider the Zoom products for the future. I bought the LS-P4 because I need to start with something very portable and light in weight, so I can bring it with me without an external mic, and carry it to work in my briefcase. It is also easy to use in the hand to record radio broadcasts. When it gets loud, the capability of handling sound pressure levels (SPL) of up to 120dB without clipping as well as its new 2 mic noise cancelling system comes into play. If a recording was made with levels that were too low, the in-device normalisation allows for boosting the recording volume without distortion – now also for MP3 recordings. Both are easy enough to use, the H4 being a bit more intuitive for the casual user. The big advantage of both is that the screen and the controls are far less fiddly than the LS-P4, however the LS-P4 is far more portable and I take a pair everywhere as I can use lightweight clamps to attach them to tree branches, pipes or whatever is to hand and just leave them without the risk of handling noise. Clearly a big shotgun negates some of the foregoing.

The inbuilt memory is 8GB – this can capture over 250 hours of MP3 at 320kbps – but the device also supports a Micro SD card up to 32GB. You can find lots of videos on youtube about people reviewing mics. Look for things like "on-location mic" or "boom mic" or similar to find mics meant to record at a distance. A compact unit, the LS-P1 fits well in the hand and is very light. Despite its featherweight payload, the device is well made and doesn’t feel particularly fragile – but the Olympus CS150 Multipurpose Case will be a good investment for anyone prone to dropping things. Shotgun microphones don't actually amplify sound, but they reduce off-axis sounds. So, it won't amplify the sound coming from a far away bird but it can still reject noise from a nearby road (for example). Very few mics are good for long-distance recording. The ME66/67 does pretty well because of the high sensitivity and good off-axis rejection. They do not amplify the sound, but they are very sensitive to it. Parabolic are the true long-range mics. In any case, I think both those choices are off the table for Phil given budget and ergonomics.Voice balancer (makes smaller voices louder and ensures that louder voices stay below a given level) I tested my cable with an ohmmeter. It does the right thing. The + goes to tip & ring, the - and gnd go to sleeve. It is mono to the L&R from a single phase. There is no "out of phase" thing happening. In reading through the manual, it gradually occurred to me that the mic settings are turned off when an external mic is plugged in. It doesn't say that explicitly, so I was not entirely sure, but I believe you are correct. The P5 carries two AAA batteries (vs. one in the P4), so maximum recording time (on battery) for any given configuration doubles. TRESMIC - 3 microphone system (2 directional for stereo, 1 omni-directional that captures low frequencies) I'm reading about the Zoom products, and why field recording buffs are using them rather than the equivalent products from other manufacturers. It appears that the noise floor of H4n Pro and H5 is low compared to similarly-priced products from other competitors. The H5 will also take an accessory shotgun that replaces its standard mics it has its uses, but you are better off with your ME66. I will let you know how I get on with it in the next few days, and how I like the Rode Lavalier when it arrives.

The three have RF biasing (which means they work in humid places), they are sensitive and they have a very low self noise.
