While the resolution is pretty average, the S22 Plus wins some points in other display areas. Its max brightness is very high at 1,750 nits, and thanks to the AMOLED screen, contrast is impressive. The triple rear camera has everything you need for incredible shots, including a 50MP main lens, plus a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens and 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. So, whether you’re shooting sunsets or aiming for a closeup or using the nightography feature, it’ll capture all the details – especially after dark, since it has night mode too. On top of all that, Adaptive Pixel tech further enhances brightness and colour for realistic pictures you could almost touch. Proximity Sensor, Hall Effect Sensor, Light Sensor, Gyroscope Sensor, Accelerometer (G-Sensor), Magnetometer, Barometer, Fingerprint Sensor One of the strongest aspects of the S22 Plus is certainly its camera: While the main sensor is a 10MP (f/2.2) one, the rear camera module on the S22 Plus has the same colour as the metal body and consist of a 50MP wide (f/1.8), 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2) and a 10MP telephoto (f/2.4) sensor with an impressive 3x optical zoom. The main sensor is larger this year to get more light in. This, on paper, should translate to much better nighttime performance too, but they are still not exactly where we want them to be due to some white balance issues. Generally, the photos are crisp and bright, yet the colour accuracy is still not as good as the Google Pixel 6 Pro. Video recording goes up to 8K, which we’ve no idea why any average user would use. There’s also 4K recording at up to 60fps, and using a sub-8K-resolution also lets you use image smoothing and stabilization. The display of the S22 Plus is a 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X one, which makes it 0.1 inches smaller than the predecessor. It has a dynamic refresh rate that goes from 10Hz all the way up to 120Hz to preserve battery life when on-screen elements are static and offer a buttery smooth display all the other times. The average brightness is also higher with the S22 compared to the older model. Expectedly, the colours are vivid with an impressive contrast ratio and the 2340 x 1080 resolution looks sharp. The Exynos 2200 chipset offers a strong performance with impressive enhancements - maybe not for the basic tasks but for the graphics and neural processing, it's a great jump. Samsung’s Galaxy S devices used to be industry-leading for its amazing-looking displays. While the S22 Ultra gets to keep this title, we’re not sure the S22 Plus deserves it. That’s not to say the display is bad looking, but it doesn’t stand out from the crowd. That’s because the top-end Galaxy S22 Ultra is so, so much more. With an exclusive set of features, including the addition of the S Pen stylus, why should you settle for minor changes when you can spend just a little more and get the whole shebang?Still, if you’ve already decided against paying more for the Ultra, the good news is that the S22 Plus is pretty much everything you could possibly want from a flagship smartphone in 2022. It’s just that it’s not quite as head-turning as its more expensive sibling, and there’s a good chance that you’d be better off saving more money and buying the cheapest S22 instead. On that note, I was also impressed with the S22 Plus’ Night mode. Again, there’s plenty of definition to images, and the phone’s AI algorithms did a good job at boosting the brightness without adding any unnatural colour tints or visual noise. There’s one caveat, however: you often have to hold the phone steady for a few seconds – not ideal if you’re taking night-time pictures in freezing temperatures with your gloves off. Sitting slap bang in the middle of the range in terms of price, it’s a decent option, but it doesn’t really stand apart from the rest, either. The bigger screen is a nice bonus, as is the chunkier battery, but sadly I can’t see many of these flying off the shelves. The Exynos 2200 performed well in our benchmarks, although the speed gains are negligible compared to last year. In the Geekbench 5 single- and multicore CPU tests, the S22 Plus scored 1,144 and 3,488, which, as you can see from the graph below, is pretty much identical to the previous Exynos 2100 found inside the S21 Plus.
