I was actually really happy with the original cut of the 2007 cut of Rise of the Footsoldier. I would never call this edition the director’s cut because I was happy with the cut at the time. I wasn’t forced by anybody, Optimum or Carnaby, to cut the original down..” The new Extreme Edition also comes with special features including interviews with the director and Carlton Leach. One of the most interesting is the new commentary done for the cut with Julian Gilbey and Terry Stone which gives an insight into what has changed between versions and lots of reminiscing of the making of the film. For people interested into film making Gilbey talks quite in depth about how he re-edited the new cut to improve the action scenes. The movie says it gives the spectator an inside view of the British criminal underclass, more in particular the Essex underclass. Football-hooligans, steroids, cocaine, heroine and violence, lots and lots of violence. Violence resulting from paranoia and fear in general. In this movie no-one seems to use his (or her) brain, we're looking at a bunch of animals in clothes. Like I said, there is not much of a plot and the storytelling leaves a lot to be desired.

Based on the true story of the brutal Rettendon triple murders in 1995, Rise Of The Footsoldier introduced viewers to the cut throat world of Essex organised crime. Now 5 years since it's release revisit the terraces of the east end with the new Limited Extreme Extended Edition Steelbook, featuring over 20 minutes of all new extreme footage and an all new commentary and interview with visionary Director Julian Gilbey. BBC Online . Retrieved 18 September 2014. This movie could have been great. It is not in my opinion. The storyline is fragmented, the editor appears not to be able to choose between a Guy Ritchie-style of storytelling and a more straightforward one. There is a great emphasis on excessive violence, including torture. Too much so if you ask me. The characters are very shallow and stereo-typed, I would have liked to see more depth there. It is hard to identify with the main character. As a result the movie remains shallow as a whole. Rise of the Footsoldier Part II: Reign of the General Box Office". Box Office Mojo .
