The Polygon Revo’s styling is very close to that of Oakley’s classic Radar. The lens in particular has a shape that’s almost identical to the premium brand’s classic, half-frame shades. Seeing well while looking good is what the Bold Anti-Fog Glasses are all about. The sunglasses have a stylish, modern design and offer you a very wide and clear field of vision, so you can always see exactly what’s going on around you – even out of the corner of your eye. The main lens is a CAT3 mirrored lens and a second, CAT1 amber lens is included for lower-light conditions. The final lens is a CAT0 clear lens for night riding or poor conditions.

Add in a wire-cored nosepiece with plenty of adjustment, and the Cryptos are great-fitting glasses that stay in place, even on gravel trails. The lens at its deepest is 50mm but, because of its close-fitting shape, it’s best suited to small/medium-sized faces. Endura has opted for a multi-tint running from dark at the brow to lighter at the base. Both sides of the lens have been treated with an anti-reflection coating so the view is clear. The arm tips are rubberised, which also aids grip, and the soft-touch nosepiece has plenty of adjustment too. They come with three different lenses and switching between them is a case of sliding a latch on the inside of the frame, which releases the lens. It’s not the easiest way to switch, but after you’ve changed them a few times it eases up. On the road, these glasses work very well. The soft tips on the arms are metal-cored so you can bend them a little to fit and keep them in place, and the nosepiece is adjustable too. Away from the aerodynamics, the Propels provide an absolutely outstanding view of the road. The massive lens allows a huge uninterrupted field and the Clarity lens really does what it's named to do. As the Propel has such good close coverage then they do tend to fog so they're not ideal for moist days or sweaty riders. You can adjust the fit of the Propels though, with a choice of three nose bridges and sliding arms - something that isn't seen on many cycling glasses. AGU spends a great deal of time and energy searching for ways to further develop and improve products.

The Gabbro II is the latest design in Endura’s ever-growing eyewear range. The oversized wrap-around lens is 53mm at its deepest and is held within a rigid full frame made from lightweight thermoplastic TR90 material (the same as you’ll find on premium brands such as Oakley and 100%). First off, it's nice to have a hardshell case that will be useful if you're throwing the sunglasses in a bag and travelling with them. Second, you should hope for a soft microfibre cloth to help keep the lenses clean. You might also find a lens cleaning cloth or even a kit with a spray. Other brands have a soft case that can double as a lens cloth. Again, the best cycling glasses have rubber pads that grip the side of your head to hold them securely in place without needing tight arms and so that they're not relying on hooking over your ears. There are also a few with adjustable or bendable arms to ensure a good fit. Peripheral coverage to the sides and bottom of the lenses is important, as glare that creeps in here can be distracting. You also want to make sure that the frames are, as much as possible, out of your field of vision as they can obscure obstacles - hence the current trend to larger and larger lenses. Frameless designs are useful in this respect. What are the best cycling glasses for riding in the rain?

Buyer’s guide: six things to consider when buying cycling sunglasses

AGU is known for its good-value, no-nonsense rainwear more than anything else, but with its sponsorship of Lotto-Jumbo and a move into pro racing (with some of its team riders seen in these shades) things have changed. If you wear spectacles off the bike and need prescription cycling glasses, finding cheap cycling glasses compatible with corrective (prescription) lenses is still possible. Category 3: These lenses provide a high level of protection from visible and UV light allowing only 20 per cent of visible light to penetrate. This is important for long summer rides on the bike. The curve of the wrap-around shield lens ensures no distortion, and, thanks to two small brow vents, there was no fogging.

The frame has plenty of spring to it and the glasses gripped our tester’s head securely, thanks to the combination of skinny arms with rubberised tips and the wire-cored, adjustable rubber nosepiece. After all, they spend more time on their bikes than anyone else and as such know all about the various applications of new products, any problems the could be encountered and what possibilities remain. Protection from the wind is excellent and the clarity of the lens is as sharp as you would expect from premium glasses. The single lens is best suited to brighter days, but they’re not so dark as to be a hindrance on the road when it’s dull. Despite the fact that the Amoks only come with a single set of lenses, they are very easy to switch out and they feature small vents at the brow. One of the reasons for sponsoring professionals was to get in with the most demanding group of cyclists around, who could test and use cycling clothes at the highest level and giving suggestions for improvement.Another important area to look at to ensure the frame fits properly is the nosepiece. Most cycling glasses have adjustable rubber nosepieces that can be shaped depending on the dimensions of your nose. That's crucial, as you don't want the glasses slipping down your face if the nosepiece is too wide, or sitting too high and falling off completely if it's too narrow. Aside from the glasses themselves, there are a number of other little things you should be looking for when buying your cycling glasses.

On the bike, the close fit and grippy frame work well at both shielding you from the wind and staying in place. The polycarbonate lens has a nice tinted mirror finish and is designed to withstand reasonable impacts without breaking. The full-frame design is like a classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer style that’s been curved to wrap closely around your face. Optics: Curved-profile lenses provide a clear, undistorted view both at the front and in the peripheral vision zones. Look for polycarbonate lenses with full UV protection credentials.
