I managed to get my first solo exhibition the year I left teaching at the Ripley Arts Centre in Bromley and have since been part of several group exhibitions. Each chapter is named after a feature of the building or grounds, and the family’s decline is told alongside the decline of the Abbey itself, which had fallen into disrepair by the time William died. Emily Brand is advising the wife in her high-stakes divorce settlement with her former husband, a multi-millionaire with significant business interests and high social standing. I started producing prints of my originals a couple of years ago as I felt art should be affordable to all and can offer a print at a much cheaper cost than an original piece. Here Sarah gives us an insight into the exploits of Lord Byron's ancestors, including naval heroics, advice for young ladies, and rebellion.

Brand is also adept at handling challenging children disputes (with special expertise in relation to children with autism). John, or ‘Foul-Weather Jack’ (the poet’s grandfather) was a naval hero who acquired his nickname due to his reputation for survival in adverse conditions. George Gordon, 6th Baron Byron was one of the most notorious literary figures of the early nineteenth century, known for his poetry, love affairs, adventures in Europe and flamboyant lifestyle. As the book’s title suggests, the key thread running through this story is how the Byron dynasty fell from fortune through a combination of scandalous behaviour, financial ruin and cruel fate. She also has particular expertise and interest in advising on disputes concerning children on the autism spectrum. The effect of [Brand's] narrative elasticity is to give the book a novelistic depth, which is added to by rich topographical descriptions and a packed historical backdrop. She advises on cases involving family businesses or private equity and has worked on several ground-breaking cases. She is also a gifted storyteller, employing a variety of devices familiar from fiction which keep the reader’s attention and form a compelling story.

She advises UHNW individuals on cases involving complex assets and structures including family businesses, offshore trusts, private equity and hedge funds. In the New Law Journal, Family Partner, Harriet Errington highlights the wide-ranging powers of the English court to intervene following foreign divorce proceedings and the power of Pt III applications. It was the abode of William the 4th Baron Byron – a popular and successful composer and artist – and his teenage wife Frances. Emily is the Head of Family and specialises in family law with particular expertise in complex financial proceedings, often with an international dimension. Of course, this is partly to avoid confusion with all the other Byrons in the book, but it is also an effective way of removing the myth that surrounds him and showing a more vulnerable and human side to him.

She has written for The Times, Daily Telegraph, Radio Times and Washington Post, and previously worked as an editor of history and classic literature for the University of Oxford. With over 25 years of experience specialising in all aspects of family law, Emily is known for her creative approach as a litigator and is a skilled negotiator whether in the context of private settlements or court proceedings.Whether in court proceedings or negotiating private settlements, Emily delivers results for her clients, always focusing on their specific needs and concerns. Although over the years I have changed subject matter, I have always maintained an interest in the use of colour and light and find it amazing how one person can view a colour so differently from another, and the fact that we have limited colour vision – what are we missing?

Emily previously worked as a senior editor of academic history, trade history and classic literature for the University of Oxford. I work primarily in oil and acrylic paints and have always loved the way you can use the paint to create various effects. However, her history is as much caught up with the “fiddle-faddle” of the bon ton, and is all the more enjoyable for it…a ravishing family saga’ The Sunday Times Brings to life the colourful characters of the Georgian era’s most notorious families with all the verve and skill of the era’s finest novelists … A powdered and pomaded, sordid and silk-swathed adventure’ Hallie Rubenhold ‘A chocolate box full of delicious gothic delights – jump in’ Lucy Worsley ‘Brand is a great historian, equal to the huge challenge of telling the story of history’s most turbulent and colourful lives’ Dan Snow ‘A mesmerizing tale of sex, obsession, madness, invention, and reinvention. His family, he would come to learn, had in recent decades become known for almost unfathomable levels of scandal and impropriety, from elopement, murder, and kidnapping to adultery, coercion, and thrilling near-death experiences at sea. Her book The Fall of the House of Byron (John Murray, 2020) was selected as BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week, and a Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday and BBC History Magazine Book of the Year. Following the fates of the poet's ancestors over three generations, it is a saga that begins in rural Nottinghamshire and plays out in the gentlemen's clubs of Georgian London, amid tempests on far-flung seas, and in the glamour of pre-revolutionary France.
