Mama always tuts when she sees my drawings. She doesn’t approve of them at all. Papa laughs and thinks them funny, but he says that I should start drawing seriously now. He is hoping that I have true artistic ability. It’s not just because he is an indulgent father (though he is!). He’d like at least one of his children to have inherited his talent. Rupert is the eldest but has never had the patience or indeed any natural ability at art. I am his twin and only fifteen minutes younger, so now Papa is pinning his hopes on me. He laughed again. ‘Perhaps, when you are eighteen or so, I might send you to Paris to be properly trained, though I know Mama will object!’

I love your drawings, Rose. They’re very lively and amusing, but I think it’s time for you to learn to sketch properly. You should draw from life,’ he said now, unusually serious.I'm probably far too old for JW, but as a school librarian I always enjoy an opportunity to read her newer books, and this was perhaps my favourite! I knew I was wishing for the moon. This was another tired old argument, and one that involved further criticism of Mama. She had no qualms about sending my brother Rupert away to school, but she refused to even consider my education. I have to make do with Miss Rayner in the nursery schoolroom.

The characters I found interesting in this book are Clover, the nursery maid, Beth, Rose’s troubled sister, and Mrs Budd, Beth’s nurse. I didn’t like Rose that much and I found Paris very creepy for kissing a 13-year-old. I learnt that Hyde Park was still a thing hundreds of years ago. The time it was set was interesting because they used interesting dialect. It was not realistic because her parents wouldn’t have stayed together as they did not love each other, and at the beginning it was said that the Dad had the money but later on her Mum had the money. The plot was exciting. I enjoyed this book. I found Beth really interesting because of her disability, she was hidden from the world. I also really liked the description of Paris, but I didn’t really like the mother whom they call Mama because she definitely favoured Rupert over Rose and tried to pretend Beth didn’t exist, which was really sad. I also didn’t really like Nurse Budd because she was “helping” Beth by giving her a drug (I think it was opium). Rose is the privileged eldest daughter of the artist who sketched Clover in Clover Moon. Rose is jealous that her twin brother, Rupert, has gone away to school. Her younger siblings aren’t much fun and she feels trapped between childhood and adulthood. She wonders why Rupert is allowed to grow up, but her mother still expects her to be a child. I found Rose quite interesting because she’s supposed to be a lady but she’s quite ambitious anyway. I didn’t not like any characters. What is wrong with mothers in JW books? They're either incredible, working mums, snappish, evil, pressuring non-working mums or dead. I understand that it makes a good novel, but eyou know what also makes a good novel? A bit of variety. He laughed at this. He doesn’t mind if we argue with him, so long as we do it politely. He actively encourages us to discuss and dispute. She misses her brother very much. But then she makes two new friends, though neither are considered suitable: the new nursery maid, Clover Moon, and her father’s bohemian protégé, Paris Walker. Rose suddenly finds her life turned upside down … Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award. I learnt how children in the Victorian times were treated and how boys were allowed to go to school but girls weren’t. It showed the children could become servants from the age of 11.

I’m afraid I’m not inspired by whiskery old gentlemen with bulging waistcoats and tartan trews,’ Papa said. Rose Rivers is the main character of the book of the same name. She is the fraternal twin of Rupert. She lives as the eldest daughter of a wealthy Victorian family. Throughout the book Rose expresses her dislike of her life feeling lonely and unwanted several times throughout the novel. She struggles to make friends, especially with those of a similar social standing, eventually she befriends Clover moon who works for her family as a nursery maid. While when Paris has good news for Rose about her comedy sketches, things get misinterpreted and her family leave without her...I know you find still-life compositions boring, Rose, but they teach you observation and perspective and shading. They will bring your sketches to life, so that they seem realistic representations.’ I hated it and the whole relationship with her family especially her Father crumbled and were completely useless! I hated that so much. Then they go away and decide to make her go to school which is the worst punishment because that’s what she wanted all along! All in all, I found this novel very interesting and I have taken in a lot of information on different perspectives and how lives were in the Victorian times. I now feel I could reflect on my new knowledge, which could then make my actions more thankful and generous. It could also perhaps lead me into being more understanding with other people’s problems and maybe more giving to others who are less able or unfortunate. Oh, I do miss Rupert. He is by far my favourite brother. We are not at all alike even though we are twins (Rupert is very good-looking and I am not), but when we were little Papa called us Tweedledee and Tweedledum. We went everywhere together and frequently spoke in unison. We weren’t interested in our sister Beth when she was born. We couldn’t be bothered with any other playmate. We were an entity unto ourselves. I really liked Rose Rivers because of how emotional it made me feel; it was as if I was Rose, standing there and watching everything happen. Jacqueline Wilson is an amazing author andI would really recommend her. The storyfeels so realistic and interesting especially as I love the Victorians. I would rate this book 5 stars.
