The victim might have had a drink before performing and cyanide may have been diluted into it. Cyanide kills someone within five minutes of consumption. It would be the perfect way to kill the victim. Oh, hey, poor you,’ Simon said to us with an American accent that gave me a start, for it was rather similar to Alexander’s. ‘Martita is a horrible person.’ But he winked and grinned, and Martita thumped him on the shoulder, looking furious and fond at the same time. Of course I have!’ gasped Daisy. ‘Why, she’s famous! The Rue Theatre might be going through a difficult time, but it’s still quite the most important Shakespearean playhouse in the country!’ Theresa and Miss Crompton, I realized, managed all the guts and muscles and blood of the theatre, while Inigo only hovered beatifically out in the stalls and on the stage itself, directing rehearsals in a most godlike way. But with every day he became more and more like the Old Testament God rather than the gentle New Testament one, for rehearsals were not going particularly well. Hazel Wong – Actress, playing the role of Potpan, and Vice-President and Secretary of the Detective Society

I’m not a nurse,’ said Bridget coolly. ‘I am a maid, and I am completing the task I have been given by my employer, which is to bring the girls to the theatre and ensure they are safe. Now that I have done so, I’ll be off to my real job. I’ll come to collect them at seven this evening.’ Have a look at those,’ said Aunt Lucy, ‘and then begin to go through this exercise book. Solve what you can, and bring your work to me this afternoon.’ Rose Tree (born Susan Brown) was a major character in Death in the Spotlight. She was the Rue Theatre's star, set to play Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. Daisy and Hazel investigated her murder, thinking she was the victim, but it turned out she had murdered Annie Joy and swapped places with her. Fresh from their adventure in Hong Kong, Hazel Wong and Daisy Wells are off to the Rue Theatre in London to face an entirely new challenge- acting. I think there will be jealousy and envy which will eventually lead to the murder. Perhaps there will be a dark secret. Maybe the victim is about to perform on stage but is killed before she/he has the chance to perform. The way the victim is killed is when everyone performing in the previous scene gets off and the victim gets on and the curtains draw out the murderer kills. The murderer hangs from the curtain on the inside. Also , one of the props in Romeo and Juliet is a knife and that knife could have been the weapon.

Retailers:

We cannot be here and there too …”,’ said Daisy, grinning, as though she had read my mind. ‘I should think even you would be able to manage that. Oh, this really is amusing. Just wait until I tell George—’

Hilda Dove wasn’t born Hilda Dove, of course. Most actors choose better names when they go on the stage – who’d go and see a leading lady called Bertha Jones? And I know because of Bertie,’ said Daisy, waving her hand airily. ‘He’s quite obsessed, and I steal his theatre magazines. After all, you never know what knowledge may turn out to be useful – and so it has proved.’ She spent her teenage years at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, reading a lot of murder mysteries and hoping that she’d get the chance to do some detecting herself (she didn’t). She then went to university, where she studied crime fiction, and then worked at a children's publisher. Then, of course, I realized why I had chosen it: I have often felt like Ruth in that poem, and I did at that very moment. I staggered on to the end, melting under the lights and frying with dreadful shame, for I had let out more of myself than I had meant. Then I stopped and there was only a ringing silence. I felt as though every empty chair was staring at me. I do say again that Daisy's attitude is at times quite too much for me. She is still acting like she is better than Hazel, and if Hazel tries to do something else she gets all grumpy about it. Yes, I do see some improvement on the field. She is grudgingly complimenting Hazel, and it seems she is quite proud of her best friend. But there is still tons of room for it. And it would also be nice if Daisy wouldn't be so eh about Hazel liking boys, or specifically Alexander. You expect her to respect you, but yeah, respect works both ways. Please understand that for once. But I do feel that both girls grew quite a lot with all that happened in this book so I have good hopes for the next books. INDEED!’ thundered Inigo. Miss Crompton blinked at him, and he coughed and said, ‘Indeed. This play will be realistic. It will be immediate. It will be GENIUS!’I hope that performing on stage will help Hazel find her confidence and make Daisy realize that she is not the only person good at everything! I also hope that their will be an appearance of the Junior Pinkertons, perhaps also participating in the play, and Hazel will finally tell Alexander about her feelings for him. I want there to be a huge twist in this story, and lots of tension eg. the murderer finds out they are investigating and holds them captive/targets them. Maybe one of the culprits from a previous book could return, seeking revenge! Whatever happens in the book, I’m sure that it will be just as amazing, if not more, than all the others!! :):) I thought that this was a brilliant book! I have already read the first six in the Murder Most Unladylike series and I had challenged myself to finish the series over the summer. It was interesting for it to be set in a theatre and I agree that a theatre is an excellent place to hold a fictional murder case! As always with Robin Stevens, it was gripping until the end and I thoroughly enjoyed going on the case with Daisy and Hazel. As mystery is my favourite genre (particularly murder mysteries) this Kia ora from New Zealand, Robin. I think that there going to be some enemies in the theatre group who don’t like each other and one of them will get the star part. Other people will get jealous and then there will be a murder. I think this will be to do with poison because ‘Rue’ like the name of the theatre is a poison herb in some plays. Hazel and Daisy will have parts on stage and they will realise that the poison used in the play is actually real!

Robin is now a full-time author, and her books, The Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries and The Guggenheim Mystery, are both award-winning and bestselling. She lives in Oxford. Life is acting,’ said Daisy. ‘That doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to complain when you have to act with someone dreadful.’I am still not sure. But, whether it was supposed to be or not, that is why Daisy and I joined the Rue Theatre Company. She would not stay quiet when she disagreed with Inigo’s direction, though, and their discussions usually ended with Rose speaking to Miss Crompton and setting off an argument between her and Inigo. Miss Crompton bristled and glared, Inigo became more and more Old Testament, and Rose pouted and took refuge in Wardrobe with Annie, the dresser, who had become her fast friend. i gave this book five stars. loved it so much and had a great plot twist. i was certain that the killer was Martita but she wasn’t. the diversity in the book was great(considering it was the 1930’s)and daisy coming out was so unexpected but good. her crush on Martita was a great storyline. i liked how Hazel’s Hong Kong attitude/personality stayed with her and she becomes more confident. i’m surprised i finished it in like two days but i did. I also liked how Inspector Prisley was in this book and actually let the Detective Society do their investigating. George and Alexander being in this book was great too cause i love them too. A very readable and enjoyable story and a seventh mystery for our two indefatigable amateur detectives who continue to entertain their readers with their investigative endeavours. As usual, the two girls complement each other well, with Daisy being the more daring and intuitive of the duo and Hazel being the more cautious and practical; however, this story (like its predecessor) is an interesting one in that we see Hazel becoming more confident in herself, and the normally overly-confident Daisy feeling rather unsure of herself when she becomes attracted to the feisty Martita; in fact the author looks at more than one same sex relationship in this book, in addition to focusing a little more on people of different race/colour. Although reading this as an adult there were areas where I had to suspend my disbelief - for example, how likely is it that a police inspector would allow two young girls to assist him in his murder enquiries and allow one of them to hide in a cupboard to listen to witness/suspect statements? That said, I very much enjoyed this little story, despite not being the target age of the book and, more importantly, the young person I bought this for thoroughly enjoyed it and became totally caught up in the story. We are now looking forward to another adventure with Hazel and Daisy - so, book number eight: 'Top Marks for Murder', here we come! She winked at us both in a way that was clearly a warning, just as someone came down the stairs towards us.

Hazel Wong- Actress, playing the role of Potpan, and Vice-President and Secretary of the Detective Society Daisy blinked. ‘We made a mistake,’ she said, squaring her shoulders and standing as upright as she could next to Bridget. ‘It won’t happen again.’ Aunt Lucy held up her hand. ‘Wait,’ she said. ‘I’ve had a thought. Let me make a few telephone calls.’

Yes, Chloe’s was very good I especially liked the bit where the scissors are found with bits of safety wire! What an excellent clue to the mystery! Well done Chloe! Dull!’ said Daisy, pushing them aside to perch on my desk, but I thought them quite marvellous. I lost myself in them for hours, far past the time I would have been brave enough to be seen studying anything at Deepdean, and only stopped when my brain was humming with numbers and symbols and languages. Still, it was Uncle Felix who had the final say while we lived with him – and Uncle Felix continued to want us far away from murder or mystery of any kind.
