Fan favourite Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) arrived for one last spot of scenery-chewing, announcing himself with “I smell the smell of roasting Irishmen”. It turned out to be the mumbling Jewish mobster who was the only hotel guest on Miquelon Island. In return for Tommy selling his opium to the Solomons gang and giving them Boston supremacy, Alfie signed over Camden Town to Tommy. Image Credit: Sydney Living Museums William Cahill, taken in 1923. His waistcoat seems to sport a two-tone front patch. After the sad passing of actress Helen McCrory, we also don't expect Aunt Polly to re-appear in season 6. In a recent Esquire profile, Cillian Murphy revealed that "if it wasn’t for Covid, there would be a whole other version of this show with Helen in it," presumably because filming on season 6 would otherwise have taken place while the actress was still able to participate. They wear newsboy caps, which were for the working class. Sometimes, you would see men also wearing them from upper classes for very casual country wear but, more typically, these were flat caps that didn’t have the button in the middle and were less voluminous. 2. Overcoats Obviously, Cillian Murphy is returning as Tommy, along with the other usual Shelby suspects, including Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby. The psychological troubles Tommy experienced at the end of season 5 also triggered the ethereal apparitions of Tommy's dead wife, Grace Shelby, so we'll likely see Annabelle Wallis again, too.

Incidentally, despite the broad political context of season 6, Murphy told Esquire that "a lot of [the new season] is close to home; in fact, all of the things that really come up in [season] six are from close to home…” Similarly, for his daytime wedding, a man of Tommy Shelby’s status would be expected to wear a morning ensemble, but he instead opts for a “Sunday best” approach, reflecting his working class origins on one of the most important days of his life. In rare admissions about Peaky Blinders season 6, Cillian Murphy told Rolling Stone and Esquire that new episodes are "dark as f**k" and "going to be very intense," adding that "the word we keep using is 'gothic.' Yeah, it’s going to be heavy!" He often tilts his hat to one side. It definitely has his 1930s flare. [Image Credit: BBC]Historically, though, I would have expected Tommy Shelby more to maybe dress like Mosley and maybe a bit less like the street brawlers of the early seasons of the series. This scene emphasizes both the working-class nature of peaked and flat caps and the ubiquity of designs, collars, and styles available. Image credit: BBC. But, he still has a newsboy cap, so there’s still some original Peaky Blinder in him. 2. Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) Laurence has been a broadcasting contributor on television and radio, including KISS, Heat Radio, BBC Radio London, Radio 5 Live, and BBC Breakfast. He is also a visiting lecturer at various universities teaching journalism, including City, University of London, Nottingham Trent, Staffordshire University and London Metropolitan.

Sydney Living Museums has made available a remarkable collection of mug shots culled from the archives of Australian police agents. These images document exactly what men who encountered law enforcement were wearing after being arrested, before attending court, and while being sent to prison.

Before that, he held roles as Editor, Deputy Editor, and Associate Editor focusing on news, social, and video.Laurence hosted the BBC Sounds podcast Obsessed with Peaky Blinders in 2019, as well as his own podcast production, Time of My Life, where he interviews fascinating elders about their life lessons, including Only Fools and Horses' Sir David Jason, Star Trek’s George Takei and Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh. He’s now dressed more in the late-30s fashion, which makes sense from men of his status. He has shed accoutrement of the street brawler and become much more aligned with the other upper-class criminals that appear in the show. Changretta likes to wear many gold rings, a watch chain, and always a fedora hat. Even though his ties are not flashy, overall his outfits and his scarves are definitely a notch or two above Tommy Shelby’s. As the seasons progress, the Peaky Blinders evolve past solids and into the prints and stripes that will dominate the 1930s. Suit material, however, remains functional, heavy-weight wool, an ideal fabric for the regular wear-and-tear of early 20th century life and to handle the especially rough lives of the Peaky Blinders.

As for its setting, we know World War II will start to loom over the story in Peaky Blinders season 6. "Because of the nature of the decade, the 1930s, we know what happened at the end – that war began. There are rumblings and rumors of war and that's overshadowing the whole thing. It makes the stakes higher," Knight told the Press Association in 2020. So while series six will be the last, the franchise will live on. A dance-theatre production, written by Knight and choreographed by the Rambert dance company, is due to open at the Birmingham Hippodrome later this year before a nationwide tour. A feature film is in the works. Knight has said it may spawn further TV shows. In the UK, viewing figures for new episodes have tripled since the show began – so don't be surprised if Peaky Blinders season 6 isn't the last we'll see of the Shelbys. If you look closely at the edge treatment of this bowler hat, it looks much more like a modern one versus original old ones that had really a sharp crease – more like that one of a top hat. And we have a few vintage ones here and you can really see the difference. The old ones that we have are so much more elegant than what he wears in the show. The brim curls on the modern bowler hats are just not comparable. A gentleman in the 1930s wearing a classic bowler hat The elephant in the blood-spattered room is violence. Peaky Blinders is brutal in the grand, blood-letting tradition of on-screen gangsterism. When Arthur announces that the jazz club is under new management, he does so while holding the limp body of its outgoing manager, whose face we have just watched him destroy with a broken wine bottle. Beyond those hazy details, though, we'll have to wait until new episodes are released to really know what Peaky Blinders season 6 has in store. What comes next for Peaky Blinders?

For most of the early seasons, the members of the Peaky Blinders limited themselves to dark-colored, relatively plain garments, although their suits and coats occasionally have unusual textures or unique weaves. Stephanie Cawley established the “Peaky Blinders look” as she got inspired by Getty archival images, by Peter Doyle’s Crooks Like Us, as well as original mugshots of the very Peaky Blinders that the show is modeled after. McCosh plastered an entire wall in her office with period photographs and McCosh went hunting at auctions for original vintage fabric, which she could then use to make clothes that fit the actors. It’s true, the real Peaky Blinders were distinguished by their peaked caps, but disposable razor blades weren’t even marketed until 1903, and so they could not have played a role in the naming of the real Peaky Blinder gang. In general, Twenties and Thirties suits are distinguished primarily by their breadth. Lapels are wide, cuts are fuller, and there is generally more padding. Fabric choices were also more plush, giving clothing a fuller look, and there was less waist suppression, although the inverted v silhouette remained very popular. Arthur Shelby is the eldest Shelby brother and, as such, has the highest standing in the family, but Tommy is certainly smarter and ahead of the game. I think, in the show, the costume designers wanted to ensure that the Peaky Blinders have a certain “I don’t give a damn” attitude, which makes them pair a city coat with a tweed suit and a newsboy cap, even though they could afford to dress like aristocrats at the time because they did have the money. In his jewelry, you can see his Albert watch chain with a fob and a tie bar that’s so high up that you can see it. It’s intended to be seen, even though the buttoning point of the waistcoat is quite high. By wearing an outfit like this to his wedding, he clearly rejects class conventions, which is in line with his character.
